Turning the House Upside Down!
So, I've told the story many time about how we bought our house with 2 children, which is what we expected to be the case forever. Then, our miraculous, wonderful little Matthew suprised us and we had to make some adjustments. Now, our home is a split into 4 levels. There is the basement where we have the adult den (wow, that sounds dirty...it's just where the nice, big tv is) and the laundry room. Then, the first floor is where the foyer, playroom, office, full bathroom and a bedroom is. The second floor is the living room, dining room, and kitchen. The third floor has three bedrooms, one of which is the master with an attached full bathroom and a half bath in the hallway.
When we moved in, obviously, we were all sleeping upstairs. When Matty was born, we kept him upstairs in the small bedroom because he needed to be in proximity to us at night for feedings, etc. Julia kept her room because, aside from the master, it was the biggest and she's the oldest, and we moved Patrick downstairs to the bedroom off the playroom.
Well, now he's 4 and Patrick is feeling lonely down there. He comes up in the night and we'll wake up with him in our bed. He says he's scared downstairs, and I don't know how much is manipulation and how much is real, but the fact is, I can see where he'd feel separated from us when we are ALL upstairs except for him.
So, this weekend, we're tearing the house apart. Dh and I are going to take over the playroom, Patrick's room and office and make it our master suite. We're moving Julia into our old room (feel like the teenage girl should have the full bath, eventually), moving the boys into Julia's old room, to share, and making Matthew's old room the playroom. We're going to have to purge a lot as Matthew's old room is TINY, so it's going to be a tight playroom, but it's doable. We are keeping a playroom because we have so much BIG stuff (craft table, train table) that we don't want to have to get rid of it or put it in bedrooms. (although the train table may go in the boys room)
Patrick is so excited to be upstairs and sharing a room with his brother. Julia really could care less...she just likes excitement. Matthew hasn't a clue, but he'll be thrilled when he finds out he's sharing a room with his brother.
You may not hear from me a lot this weekend because I'll be doing heavy lifting and soothing my aching muscles!!!

Thats a big job. When my dd went to college dd#2 moved into her room(I redid it paint and all) and I moved my sewing room into dd#2 old room.
That was a big job and yours sounds so much bigger but the kiddos will love it.The math never lies, budget in INK!

Our kids all just switched rooms in July and it was a much bigger undertaking than I ever imagined. Just curious why you didn't just switch and give Julia the smaller room upstairs and then have the boys share her old room. Then you would all be on the same floor.

Good question, Jennifer.
Matthew's room is SO small, that his crib and his dresser fit in it, but Julia's double bed and dresser and desk would not. All of us together would have definitely been the optimal solution. Once her bed was in that little room, you wouldn't even really be able to walk around. It's tight. The entertainment center will go against the wall and the desk against the other, and then we'll see what else can go and distribute the rest to the bedrooms. My Blog: http://amysreallife.wordpress.com
