A Gleaner Group Is...
Some of you asked what a Gleaner Group is, so thought I'd explain it... At the local food bank, there are about a dozen people who go out to the farms, ranches, etc. and 'Glean' what is left in the fields, for FREE, with this exception: 10% of what you pick goes to the FOOD BANK, 40% of it you HAVE TO GIVE AWAY (to whomeever you choose...your friends, neighbors, relatives), and then the last 50% you get to keep...
So far this year, we have gotten peaches, pears, raspberries, and then we have apples, pumpkins, and potatoes coming. (I was just welcomed in to the group in August!). Also, we have a SYSCO FOODS (which provides flour, oatmeal, sugar, etc. to restaurants, schools, etc.) close by and if something gets a tear in a bag, they throw it away, so a man from the group goes out there and brings back 50lb bags of flour, bread crumbs, sugar, rice, etc) and gives it all away!! (I, in turn, put mine in gallon size freezer ziploc bags, and give almost all of it away!)...
If any of you are interested in a Gleaner Group, contact your local food bank. Otherwise, I will be happy to get some information from mine and send it in the mail to anyone interested in starting one.
People are going hungry in our Country, and so by word of mouth, I have been able to provide about a dozen people with these staples which, hopefully, will help their food budget. I freeze all of what I keep in ziploc baggies or store it in my laundry room (that is the only place in my house suitable...what can I say? We bought a house that is so modern, it was designed for people with children who are never home!! NO STORAGE, TINY KITCHEN, and 2 LIVING ROOMS! OH, BROTHER!! Guess the builder never heard of a pantry or cupboards to put FOOD)
Hope this helps! Please feel free to send me a message if you have any more questions!
