Writer Lori Hall Steele is suffering. Her situation could be any of ours: Lori, a 44-year-old single mom, is raising her seven-year-old son. And she was about to lose her house. Why?

Lori has ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Complicating matters, Lori also has chronic lyme disease. These degenerative diseases have progressed to the point where she's confined to bed & hooked to a breathing machine, unable to work. Is the insurance company paying the bills? No. Why not? They claim that all of the treatments and tests are the result of a pre-existing condition--a claim they made before Lori even had a diagnosis.

Her family, her friends, her colleagues on Freelance Success and in the American Society of Journalists & Authors (ASJA)--still hold out hope that her doctors will find a treatment that will help her recover. In the meantime, we're pooling our resources to help her pay her medical bills and keep her home out of foreclosure. Some are applying for grants on her behalf, others are organizing a silent auction, while even more are donating money whatever they can via Paypal.

The response has been amazing. We've raised enough to relieve the burden of house payments for a couple of months, and now we're hoping to give her some breathing room with her medical bills.
