Thumbs up DS#1's good deed! (brag)

DS#1 spent the night with a friend last night (to play Guitar Hero until 4 a.m.! crazy crazy ). He needed to come home a decent hour so he could get some sleep before he went to work. Well, she showed up...at 6:45 am...with a dog in tow that he had found on one of our busiest main streets!

The dog was a neutered Pointer (purebred) who was obviously a working dog--waaaaay too much energy to be just a house dog. I called the police (AC is attached to the police here in town) and told them I am a shelter volunteer and could they come and get him? The dispatcher said that the officers don't transport animals in their cars. I mentioned Darleen's truck (I KNOW they use it on the weekend) but he had a note saying the shelter was FULL, dang it! However, the dispatcher asked if he could give out my first name and number if someone called.

We waited an hour since things were busy with the officers. Dispatch had called me to let me know they were trying to work something out. I was getting worried when the phone rang at about 8 a.m. and it was Hammer's owner! They came to get him (he had slipped out of an open gate where they had parked their travel trailer) and had been out since 1 a.m.! Sure enough, he is a hunting dog (going out to hunt tomorrow) and they had been looking for him most of the night.

They gave DS#1 a $10.00 reward (which he did NOT want to take, but they insisted) and took Hammer home.

I had gone to bed at 1:15 a.m., so have been tired all day. I took a nap and even dozed in the car on the way to the Scout Shop to get Scouting merit badges.

I am just glad DS#1 was in the right place to save Hammer. FWIW, the lady has just moved here to go to school and the Hammer still had his old tags on from clear across the state, so we would have been hard-pressed to track his owner down that way.

We need more people like your son that will go the extra distance to save an animal. That dog wouldn't have had a chance without his help. So glad he was able to get up to the dog. What a save, way to go!

That was so sweet of your son. I am glad everything worked out okay. I am sure the owners were ecstatic. It is nice to hear of good things that our youth do.

It's wonderful that your son was able to do his good deed and the owner was reunited with their dog. I know that was heart warming for all involved.

He didn't think it was any big deal. I am sooo glad that something we taught them sunk in!
