    Default Working with Mikala

    on her trumpet.
She is in the 6th grade and learning trumpet. I have played the trumpet since I was 8 years old.
So she came to me this morning and wanted me to help her play Hot Cross Buns.
So I took the trumpet and did my scales like I always do. Then because DH was playing Call of Duty 4, I broke into Taps. He did not like that. LOL
Then I started playing, On Broadway. Kala just rolled her eyes. Then looked at me and said, This is why I don't ask for your help more often. You always play for about an hour and then help me! LOL
I told her sorry, but I just love to play!

    LOL.
My son want to learn EVERY instrument. He is only 6. He currently takes violin. I told him that when it comes time to take an instrument in school, he can pick something else like one of the horn instruments.

Do you have your own horn you can keep up with, and then practice with your DD?
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

No, because she is using my horn. LOL
I will play the song that she is practicing with her on the piano. She gets a kick out of that. Plus it helps her with her timing and pitch.

I do the same thing with my son on the keyboard. I played the piano and flute for years (I don't think he's interested in the flute lol) but he always asks me to tell him how to play something on the keyboard or piano and I usually end up sitting down playing for awhile and he just gives me that look, you know that look of "excuse me, it's my time...MOVE!" Yeah that look. It's fun though when the kids are interested in things you actually know something about and are good at.

Have you thought about maybe looking for a good used trumpet possibly to play along with her? Then she might look forward to your playing sessions lol!

We have looked at them, but for the most part, the used one's have not been taken care of very well.
So for right now, I will try my best not to take it over. LOL
But what I am doing seems to be helping her. Her band director sent home a note. He keeps telling Mikala to have me come into the class. But I don't want to step on any toes.
I have taught music for a number of years, but this is the first time one of the kids have expressed any interest. She wanted to learn at school. If she had let me teach her, she would be in the high school band playing level by now. LOL

Haha, this is why I hope DS #2 doesn't learn to play the violin because I might end up taking it from him.

It wouldn't matter about what instrument any of our kids wanted to play. LOL
DH and I both play almost every intrument out there.
I play all brass, percussion, piano, guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, and steel guitar.
    DH plays woodwinds and piano.
    LOL

I played trombone for about three years and then I moved onto violin for another five. They're fun for me.

I think DS might have an affection for bass since DH has a bass from when he played in a band way back in the day.
