How Low Can You Go?
How low do you set your thermostat? We are still holding out turning on the heat . . . I was hoping to make it to at leat November, but the forecast is looking grim later this week. Dh and I were discussing it and debating how low we should set our programmable thermostat. It has been getting down to 64 at night (which is freezing to me--but I bundle up in socks/extra blankets) and the kids are sleeping really soundly. I'd like to do 64 during the day and 60 or below at night. Just wondering what everybody else does.

Right now I have mine set for 66 and I thought that was low! I tried bundling up in a sweater and extra socks, but I'm the type of person who wants to run around inside the huse in the fall/winter in "lighter" clothes.

I haven't turned on my heat either but it was pretty chilly today.... I want to wait but dont know if the weather will let me otherwise if I have to turn it on, it will be set to probably around 65 degrees.

I am always cold so we keep the thermostat at 69-70 during the day and 60 at night.
Thankfully though, we just had a wood burner installed and we haven't had to turn on the furnace yet. The last two nights have been low 30's but the house is staying warm so we are trying to hold off until Nov. atleast because I know once it gets into the teens the wood burner isn't going to heat my 3600 sqfoot house (that includes my basement and attic) enough.

I turned it on Oct 1st. 69 when I am home, 65 when I am not and at night.

We haven't turned out heat on. It was 55 in the house this morning. It's about 62-ish right now. We do have the wood stove going though, so it isn't miserable.
That said, even if I turned on the furnace it wouldn't come on right now. It's set at 59* most of the time, bumping up to 62-63 in the early am/pm (bath times).

It was about 58 in the house this morning when I got up...brrrr...but I didn't turn on the heater yet. But I don't know what we are going to keep it set at when it stays cold.

our heat is off here too, when it does go on I put it on 64, and that's where it stays till spring, it got shut off April 10th last spring, I filled up the 550 tank at the end of August, hopefully it will last till next spring. I'm thinking of investing in a couple of those oil filled space heaters, this way we can close the door to a room and get it nice and toasty while we're in there. Mostly this would be needed when watching TV or in the office on the PC.

We try to keep our heat at 58 degrees. When we have company, we jack it up to 62, but if it is just us, we bundle up and keep it at 58.

I had it on for a about 20 minutes one morning last week.....brrrrr......
but during the day we keep it around 62 and then down to 52 or so at night.
(ok, so I may cheat and bump it up a bit in the morning when I am trying to get kids moving for school!)Last edited by IntlMom; 10-20-2008 at 06:00 PM.

I don't know, we may not turn it on at all. Being in a warm climate we just use an electric blanket at night and don't mess much with turning the heat on.

68 degrees is as low as I go, other than shutting it down completely during warm weather. We have had our furnace on already, since it is already dipping into the 30's....brrrrr

We are currently sitting on 52.
Our heat is off, it was 32 outside this morning and 70 inside.
We rarely have to turn the heat on because our unit stays so hot. Great in winter... not so great in the summer.
If we have a large snow prediction, I will crank the heat in the event we lose power.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!
