I checked the bank balance *faint*

I checked the balance because yesterday was payday... sure enough there was a deposit from his company... $0.00!!!
... and then the Old Man came home with his paycheck
He has signed up for direct deposit a while ago... after reminding them several times, they finally put the paperwork in and this pay-period was the 'validation' or something... starting next period, his checks will be direct deposit.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

Oh thank goodness. I thought you were giving us bad news. Glad things will be straightened out with payroll. I'm glad you didn't write any checks out already.

A lot of companys do a 'validation direct deposit' of zero dollars to ensure that the account number/routing number etc has been keyed in correctly. Once they are sure it has been, they'll start depositing his paycheck.
They do it b/c it's a lot easier to correct an error for zero dollars than it is for an entire paycheck. If someone had keyed one number incorrectly and his entire paycheck had went to someone else and they spent it before the error was caught. You'd have a lot harder time getting that money back, then correcting a zero direct deposit, kwim?
We had the same thing happen to us when dh switched jobs. I about pooed my pants.McD

Gak! Glad it is all okay. I remember when I sold hand painted shabby chic cherries on ebay Paypal did something like that just to verify who I was and that everything was all on the up and up. They did a few pennies.

I run payroll at my work and our DD is effective immediately, no waiting period. The validation does make sense though, as most people are surprised when we say it's immediate. I would have been a bit PO'd too if I saw 0.

that would have freaked me out!
One time before we had DD my dh was at the bank on a Friday just before the bank closed. He put his check in the tube and set it off to the teller, something happened and the tube got stuck. There was nothing the bank could do. They had no idea how much the check was so they would not give him any money. His check was stuck in that tube all weekend. Monday they had someone fix it but, it was a stressfull weekend.Married 22 years to Mark
