I want to make sure I am doing the right thing, and analyzing it correctly.
My first job the Home health Aide, I have been keeping track of the expenses it takes to get to work. And it doesn't seem like it is worth it! I work about 6 - 10 hours a week make about 150.00 every 2 weeks. and figure it is taking me about 100.00 wk every 2 weeks in gas... and 20 for a babysitter on the weekend I work. So I made 30.00!
I have the second job at the college which is guaranteed 10 hours a week at 8.50 an hour. But this is federal work study so although I pay taxes, It does not affect any benefits I receive. Maybe 20.00 in gas, but I would be spending that anyway to get to my classes.
The first job, was the major glitch in my health insurance issue last week..... They are starting to increase my hours but that is just making it harder to do my school work. I don't know if I should be working harder or smarter.
I don't want to make the wrong choices, and I love the client I take care of, but it has become a big drain on life in my own home. Less time to shop, less time to cook, less time with the kids because I have lots of homework.....
It seems like a simple straight forward answer to me, but all of you always have different takes on things... thought I would ask for your opinions.....
Do surveys an hour a day? Sell things on ebay? I think I could pick up that 30.00?
I don't want to be a quitter....just cause the going got tough!
I think that, sometimes, making the decision to work outside the home is not so much about finances, but about what is right for you and your family. Money is great, but personal satisfaction is much more important. That is going to come for different people for different reasons.
Are there any other benefits that you 'earn' through this job? For example, a not-so-well-paying job can be the stepping stone to a better paying job. Or if you want to make a career in X, doing some poorly paid work in an x-related business can get you the 'perfect' resume. If that's the case, and if you CAN cope with working two jobs (if you can't, you can't), then I would keep it.
On the other hand, if this jobs causes you difficulties with your studies, this, too, is a hidden cost.
Try to get some good sleep this week. If you are tired and stressed out, it is much more difficult to make such decisions.

No benefits to the job as a Home Health Aide. The one at the college does have it's benefits. I work closely with the Dean of the College and a lot of the Professors, so that in itself has been a great benefit, and it is guaranteed for the 2 years that I will be attending. I'm hoping that I could get this one up to 15 hours in time, and that would be perfect!
The home health aide position money will count against my financial aid package as well.....
To me, the home health aide job would not be worth it UNLESS it was in the field of the degree I was going to school to receive. Then, the experience on the resume may be worth it.

No, not worth it, at least not in any way I can see. After expenses, you make $30 for 12 - 20 hours of work? At best you are making $2.50 an hour. At worst, it's $1.50. Sounds like your 2nd job will be providing you with the experience you need for a resume. And even though you might enjoy the 1st job, it's taking away valuable time away from your studies and family. I would drop the Home Health Aide job, but that's just me.

Unless there are other benefits to the home health aid, no I don't see the point of 2 weeks work for $30. Now - if you can go to the home health people and explain this to them, and get a raise, maybe. Otherwise, yeah I think you can find other ways to make $30. Delivering pizza might pay better...

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

I'd bag the home health job. I bet if you had those hours at home you could save $30. Make detergent and air dry clothes, homemade food, make sure lights are off, saving wear and tear on the car, all that little stuff adds up. I'd keep the university job. Just my $.02.

I decided to give it up! I can save by being around the house more. The proper shopping at Aldi's and Price Rite rather than Stop and Shop cause it will save time.....
and cooking well planned meals.
I also do not want to walk myself out of my financial aid, This semester did not cost me anything but my books.
Learn to sell my STUFF on Ebay...... that will make me some money!
