Get a clue M&J, you want cheap fashion I got cheap fashion.
I am watching the M&J show, they are talking about dressing for less. The first outfit they showed was over 1,200 dollars. Then they go on to say that they are going to show you how to get that look on the cheap. Key word here is CHEAP.
Several models come out and they all look very nice. The prices on every single pair of shoes was 60 and up. Every dress was 70 and up. They had a gold skirt for 129.00! They call 129.00 cheap?!?!? The people who produce these shows are so clueless. I so want to write to them and tell them that if they want cheap I can show them cheap. Try a 200.00 Bab Mackie jacket for only 7.00 now that's cheap.
I turned it off...

I listen to M&J occasionally, for the most part they do a good job with 'this for that' when they show you what you could eat for less calories... but I agree... mainstream tv is so out of touch with what is 'Cheap'... but I don't think people would tune in if they said "Dress like that for slightly less"
Show me an episode where a real woman, with a real budget (and a real body, none of these walking bones with makeup) buys an entire interactive wardrobe for the price of ONE of the 'designer' outfits
I'll keep dreaming.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

That's exactly what I want to see Lady V , a real woman with real curves dressing just as nice and those skinny chicks. Skinny girls don't believe me but it is a much bigger challenge to dress well when you are plus sized and on a budget.
One of the things that the shop I'm in does is sell clothing. We have a boutique area. I have been put in charge of finding the plus sizes. I have been all over this county and only found a few things nice enough to resell. Most of it is junk to begin with , never mind what it looks like after someone has had it for years.

~So they think 'cheap' is 1/4-1/3 of original price? I do too actually. The difference is the starting price I guess. When you're raking in the salary of a television personality or magazine editor or style consultant, $400 does probably look pretty cheap. I think it's a good rule to ignore all fashion and money advice that come out of the big cities. I don't live there and people don't dress up so much in the rest of the country.~

60$ for a pair of shoes? I have big feet (size 12-13) and I don't even spend that much on dress shoes!

It's a sad commentary when they punish plus sizes by charging so much more.
My mom and I got the same shirt from Walmart.
She wears a large, I wear a 1X.
I had to pay $2.00 more for mine for about an extra 3 inches of material.
But a small to a large there is no price difference!
And yep, M&J pissed me off.
I have NEVER paid more than $20 dollars for a pair of shoes!
Or over $30 for a skirt!
And I was always dressed nicely and in style!

There was a show on BBC that showed real women and did clothing makeovers on them. I can't remember the name, but it was something like "I Hate My Body." I saw a few episodes, and they did a really fantastic job of working with each woman's strengths. I thought it was really cool that the first thing they did was make the woman pose for some semi-nude photos with a professional photographer. Then they'd show the photos to the woman. Every time, she was amazed at how sexy and beautiful she could look.

Oh I know that show. It's actually called 'How to Look Good Naked' and they had an American version of it with that Carson guy from Queen Eye For the Straight Guy. I love that show too because it shows people they're beautiful just the way they are, and how to really appreciate what they have.

I like watching What Not To Wear alot of the time because they do have some items on the show that are reasonable (like $45 for a skirt, etc) and the clothes are pretty durable. I put myself in a pair of jeans I got for $20 (that were originally $60), my Hush Puppies that I got for $40 (were originally $80), and a top I got from Winner's for $5 that was on clearance and the outfit looks sensational!Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

Ann, do you ever look at the All You magazine that Wal-Mart puts out? When they do clothing articles they chose real models (as in real people living life, not people who model for a job) and dress them in real clothes from Wal-Mart, Target, etc.. Using real clothes they show them how to dress for their body type, pick colors, etc. It makes me feel a little better knowing they actually use real people. And, yeah, $126 skirt is NOT a bargain.

This really is irritating. They do this in men's sizes, too. DH is a 2X, he's a big fella. For the $2 or $3 more, I can go to Target and get something a little more stylish for the same price. They don't discriminate.
If they are going to charge more for big sizes in clothing, shouldn't they charge less for the smaller swimsuits? Those little bikini's only take about 1/4 yard of fabric whereas a one piece uses much more.Last edited by tbs727; 11-26-2008 at 10:42 AM.

I, too, agree with the awesomeness of using real models in All You. I also agree that whenever they do outfits on the cheap (on t.v.), I'm amazed at how out of touch they are with the average person and the average person's budget.

Yeap , I like all You.
I think a woman of any size can look good if she puts some effort into it. My only issue with the show was that these "hollywood" types were so excited about it being so cheap when in reality even those prices were out of reach for many people. I think it would fun to see a show have more then one choice , like a good better, best sort of thing. Because I want to know how to get the 200 dollar outfit for under 100, but someone on a better income might want to know to get the 2,000 dollars outfit for 200. Kwim?
