    Default Good news, bad news

My husband has found a job and it's a good one. He will be working for the hospital and his first day is Monday, an entire week of orientation. The bad news is that he wont' get his first paycheck until Dec 27. That's a little late for Christmas. So I guess I will have to get my sewing machine out and see what else I can make for gifts. I already made little purses for my girls. They will love them. Animal print with fur! I'm kinda out of ideas because they already have everything that I make and I am not a seamstress so I don't really do clothes.
Hubby is really pleased about his job and can't wait to start. I just wish we didn't have to wait so long for a paycheck.

That's great news about the job. It's really bad though how long it sometime takes to get that first check. It really stinks that it happens over Christmas too. But it will be grand when it comes!

I'm sorry about the timing of the paycheck, but glad that he will have one!

Here are some ideas for that sewing machine of yours (no, not clothes)

Kids Apron, chef hat & bakers tray -- I know there are 'food' patterns online, or home-made playdoh in food colors, some cookie cutters and the dollar store sells utensils

Traveling Tic-Tac-Toe & Checkers -- I know I have also seen patterns for a hopscotch
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

Fabric beanbags and a painted game to use them with are a hit. What about making clothes for their favorite doll or stuffed animal? You can also make blankets and pillows for a favorite lovey.

An old t-shirt that they love makes a great pillow. You can also do the checkers out of a small piece of board, painted two colors and then make some small cut outs of little flowers or what they like to be the pieces. I have made doll houses out of a cardboard box. You put extra pieces in and staple or glue them, then add wallpaper (made of scraps of material or paper) and do the walls. You can cut out a door, windows, and draw to make the fridge etc, or use cuts out for a magazine.
Cover with material a small box as a couch, and sew around pop bottle caps as pillows. They are fun to make and you really can have fun doing them. It takes some time, but you have plenty before Christmas. Get a dollar store small doll and for a little of nothing you have a great gift.

aww - it's wonderful news with some bad timing involved...

i forget how old the girls are...
but what about some stuffed toys/dolls/animals?
the apron was a great idea, as was the blanket/game sheet (checkers).

what about making a small blanket with pockets for different nature things... animals, cloud, sun, bird, tree, etc. (if age appropriate).

what about sewing fleece items? or even the no sew fleece? (if you have any setting around).

you could make a mini kitchen set - pot holders, individual placemats (unique).

    kinda hard w/out knowing ages.

Man, I'm right there where you are. Todd got out of the Army Nov 7th, is on leave till Dec 31st, BUT they're taking $300 from each check to pay off our AER loan, instead of taking it from his severance on Jan 7th. So, We're $900 short of what we would have been. Not to mention he won't get his last check on time, it will be a week late. Only 1 more paycheck before Christmas already, which will be short. And behind on a few bills. With almost NOTHING for the kids yet for Christmas. We've explained to them that this will be a very very lean Christmas and they understand. We've told them that we will make up for it either when he gets his severance or for their birthdays in June, we will get them bikes. But they have the family buying for them too, so it won't be so bad.

I'm more concerned about our bills than Christmas, really. The kiddos are old enough to nderstand what's going on, except for the baby and he's not yet a year old.

Can I say that I hate money? BLEH!

Congrats on the job!!! You sure he's not working at my hospital? We get paid every two weeks, but it's always from the pay period two weeks ago. So when I got paid on the 4th, it was from the period ending 11/22. And you are right that first check is sooooo sloooow getting to you.

Hey, who says you have to celebrate Christmas on the 25th??? The best deals are always after Christmas. Celebrate on the 28th or 29th!

Bummer about the paycheck, but I'm so happy he got a job! Yeah! Think about the after Christmas sales you can hit. I know that it doesn't help on that day, though.

Glad to hear your DH has landed a new job. Waiting so long for a first paycheck is always bad, especially when something is coming up or due. The flip side is that hospital jobs are not going to be as "seasonally vunerable" as some of the other jobs in his field. ..... Hmmm or did he switch job types all together?
