    Default Coconut Oil

I began putting 1 tsp of this oil in my morning coffee once a day a few years ago as I read and was told by a real dentist that it aids in the prevention of Periodontal desease that I have lost most of my teeth to!
It does truely slow the desease down and helps with many other things as well

It is odorless and tasteless so adding it to recipes is not only beneficial and easy but good for you too!!

What type do you use, how expensive is it and where do you get it? Is it all pretty much the same (how many questions can I ask in one thread about coconut oil?)?

I buy it at Wal Mart, Lou Ana brand. I've made sugar cookies with it before (add butter flavor) for a party because one of the girls was allergic to corn, soy and dairy, that way she could have the cookies. They turned out pretty well. I use it like any other oil in cooking, but it is a solid form instead of a liquid.

I used to cook with coconut oil. Mountain Rose Herbs had good prices on organic unrefined coconut oil, but I checked just now and they were out I think it was in the neighborhood of $28/gallon.

If you bu coconut oil, you've got to try sauteeing frozen lima beans in it. It is surprisingly good.

Nvmommyx6, that's great it's working so well for you!
I never knew that about the peridontal disease.
    Thanks for supplying that link.

A couple quick notes about it:
Refined does not smell of coconuts & does not have all the natural benefits.

Unrefined does not have anything taken away (not refined in any way) and does smell strongly of coconuts, it can also be kept unrefridgerated.

You can cook with it, but it does have a high amount of saturated fat.
(Just do your research on this)

You can use it on your hair & skin.
It's really good for chapped lips as well.

On a long hair forum I belong to, coconut oil has a huge following of people who swear by it, for deep conditioning their hair before washing, or using just on the ends of your hair to keep them protected.

That was very nice of you to take extra steps to accommodate her.

I know the commissary carries it but I'm not sure if it's refined or not. I'll have to look.

    Hello Everyone,

cheles2kids: "...You can cook with it, but it does have a high amount of saturated fat. (Just do your research on this)..."
    - Absolutely! Research about coconut oil, online and offline. I would like to offer my initial thoughts, please...

Yes, coconut oil is 92% saturated fat but what most people almost always forget to say or simply don't know is that coconut oil is predominantly medium chain fatty acids (MCFA). This is the KEY! Almost all other dietary fats or oils are mostly, if not entirely, long chain fatty acids (LCFA).

MCFAs are so so different from LCFAs. Their absorption, transport, metabolism and uses are completely different. For one, MCFA-rich coconut oil go straight to your liver to power metabolism, which simply can't be said of LCFA oils such as soybean, corn and canola oils, just to name a few.

There's so much good stuff about coconut oil that it's really worth the time researching or investigating it. Just my two cents. Take care.

Coconut Oil guy to dead on.
Have you read any of Bruce Fife's books? Lots of people looking to lose weight also take coconut oil daily as the MCFA's are very good good for the system. The pressed oil industry did a lot of harm to coconut oil back in the 40's & 50's with their false health message about how the high saturated fat in coconut oil was "bad" for one, even thou it certainly isn't

Coconut oil is also anti bacterial, we use it in first aid applications. I use it on my skin as well, basically oil cleansing method for my face, but also on all my skin as a mouisturizer.

I can not drink the coconut oil myself but have done oil pulling with it, makes ones' teeth whiter too as well as addressing oral issues. To get it into my system I will add a scoop to my oatmeal in the winter or make bark with it and add in cocoa powder or fruit puree's to kick up the flavor. My partner will just heat a teasopoon or two in a shot glass and sip on it, but that's beyond me personally.

I personally buy mine from Mountain Rose Herbs too as it's the cheapest place I've ever found. Looks like the unrefined it our of stock at the moment but they do have refined in stock.

Also, some women use it in the bedroom as a lubricant, all natural, no preservatives and not full of checmicals like store bought stuff is.

I have about 15 links on coconut oil in my favorites bar, but here is one ( I don't think it has any commerical advertising, but didn't re-read each page)

I'd like to preface this post by saying that I surely do not know everything there is to know about coconut oil, nor do I claim to.

But I would also like to suggest that people who might be interested in this product to please research websites & health books that are not of a biased opinion.
This is no way in reference to the above comments.

But whenever I am trying to find all the information that I can about a subject, I don't usually go to websites that make/sell that product.
Because obviously those sources will only list the favorable attributes of that particular product.

Just wanted to throw that out there for anyone who might be interested in researching this further, or any other product for that matter.

Nvmommyx6, I am in no way trying to take away from your post, and was just offering a comment based on some research that I had done previously on this particular oil.
I think it is wonderful that it has done so many wonderful things for you and that you are having such great results.

So my apologies to you if I have overstepped. That is not my intention by any means.
This is all I have to say, so I promise not to hijack your thread anymore.

    Hello Everyone,

Denvergirlie: "Have you read any of Bruce Fife's books?"
    - Yes, I have! What I know now about coconut oil I attribute a big deal to Dr. Bruce Fife and the late Dr. Conrado Dayrit, the Father of Philippine coconut oil, so to speak. I also frequent the Philippine Coconut Authority library for hard to find information about this wonderful tropical oil

cheles2kids: "But I would also like to suggest that people who might be interested in this product to please research websites & health books that are not of a biased opinion."
    - My kind of person! Yes, research about coconut oil, online and offline. Take it from all angles - people selling, people maligning and all the rest in between. The result is a well-informed decision.

I think I should add that after eating spoonfuls of the stuff daily, cooking with it, putting it on my skin, and using it in my hair, coconut oil in no way changed my life. Other than smelling good. I did not lose weight or become more vibrant, my skin did not become softer, my hair did not become more luxurious. That is all.

My dh used coconut oil in his tea every night before bed and he lost 25lbs. Yeah. He looks great. Now he just eats a tbsp everyday. I love it the way you can use it on your skin ect. I have put it in my cocoa and it's great too. I can't put it in my tea it makes me nauseaus for some reason.
