Someone posted that earlier in the week I think. It's pretty cool, if you ask me.

[ame="http://www.frugalvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=112977"]This morning on Inside Edition - Couple eats on $30/month - Frugal Village Forums[/ame]

If you read their blog carefully you'll find they are STARVING on $1 a day. Seriously, they are not getting adequate nutrition or calories. The headaches, fatigue, and lightheadedness are all signs they are not getting enough food, or enough of the right kinds of food. At the end of the month they've both lost weight, and neither one of them looked like they needed to. Don't follow this diet.

Yeah I agree it was not healthy at all!!! Sadly though many families are forced to eat this way. I only posted because this was the first I had heard of it or seen it since I have no cable so... no tv.I also missed the original post sorry for the repost

I just saw that this morning on comcast. The discussion forum pretty much talked about the nutritional aspects of it. I'm sure it can be done with lots of ramen noodles and tap water, but certainly wouldn't be too healthy.

I'm all for living as cheaply as possible, but that is a bit extreme, I think! Nutrition is more important than money!

You are right momto2boyz! Nutrition is more important than money. If they get too sick, think about how much their hospital bills could be!

It's a joke. I can't believe it's getting picked up in the news. Why don't they use the space/airtime to show someone who's living frugally well and without the gimmick?

Don't know if I could do this.

Wait. I know I definitely couldn't. Not if I still wanted to eat healthy and be able to do more than sit on a chair all day.

We eat cheap, but not that cheap. Here is a sample menu from tonight's dinner:
Ham Steaks (FREE with SuperTarget printable coupons)
Kroger Mac & Cheese dinner (59¢ plus the ¼ cup butter and ¼ cup milk, both purchased on sale)
Green Giant Steamfresh peas (27¢ after coupon at Wal-mart)
Pillsbury crescent rolls (27¢ after SuperTarget printable coupon and Manufacturer's coupon)
Milk to drink, purchased for $1.99 gallon on Manager's special - about 12¢ per 8 oz. serving

We fed five people on this meal. It was delicious.

I think it's awesome. I'm gonna read it all.

my ex (merrick's father) would eat ramen all the time when we were together and i tried alot of time to get him to eat other things, sometimes he would sometimes he wouldn't. the only time merrick got any fruit or veggies i had to either have my mom get it or ask zack (the ex) a lot to get anything i needed. he would rather spend the money we needed on his cars and take out (when he was running around doing whatever) rather than on the stuff we needed.

I don't think this was a gimmick or a ploy for media attention.

It is definitely not a healthy way to live and shouldn't be taken as a goal or challenge to slash your grocery bill to this level! People who eat this way are malnourished. Their purpose was to try to see if they could live on what those in extreme poverty eat.
Yeah- this isn't a frugal blog. It's about going hungry and the funny things that happen to you when you do. They've done studies on it by having people volunteer to eat a ridiculously low amount of calories for a period of time. After awhile they start acting like anorexics- browsing through cookbooks, obsessing over food. It makes your head funny.

It's not healthy but that wasn't the point. I think it's really amazing.

I read their blog. I think that is was a great experiment. While $30 a month is very extreme, I think that it really shows that people today do spend alot of money on food. It makes me want to lower my food bill by cooking more from scratch.

    Debt as of 10/25/09:

    Student Loan: Currently $9500

    Mortgage: $472,000
    Discover CC: $6500 at 0%
    Chase Disney: $3000 at 0%

    Goals:
Get monthly food budget down to $200/month for me and my husband.

I agree that the blog points out that we can always trim out convenience products a bit more, but I think it also illustrates the difficulties faced by those who don't have any more options. So for me, it was valuable on a couple of levels.
