no raise this year
Very disappointing news today. i work for a small non profit that depends on grants and donations. This year I was anticipating a slightly higher than the standard 3% raise. Unfortunately, due to cuts in funding no one will be getting a raise this year.
On the bright side, I still have a job.

I understand your frustration. Prices on everything go up up up, but wages haven't been going up for years.
I work for a bank where thousands of jobs are being cut this year (probably mine, too). Those who are fortunate enough to keep their jobs will probably see a 3% raise at the most
.
I understand that profits are down... what aggravates me is that the top guys will still get their big fat bonuses.... in the millions, of course.

I feel your pain. In all likelihood they're going to suspend the 3.5% COLA that's supposed to go into effect in January at my job. And we don't get them all the time every year. We've had to fight for it. We went years without one before. And, they're talking about mandatory time off without pay and most likely what will happen in my dept. is they'll take away our flex-time in order to assure adequate staff coverage.
And our health insurance is going up again - about $45/month more for me. Like you, I just keep doing my best to be grateful that I still have a job.
“When you get to the end of all the light you know
and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown,
faith is knowing that one of two things will happen:
you will be given something solid to stand on,
or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller
“Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
there are signs that the world is speedily
coming to an end;
bribery and corruption are common; children no
longer obey their parents;
every man wants to write a book and the
end of the world is evidently approaching.”
— From a translation of an inscription on
an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

My husband had his year end review Wednesday, I asked if there was a raise for next year. He laughed at me

There was only a 15% reduction in his incentive pay (we were prepared for much less), and he still has a job. We're not in the position I envisioned six months ago, but considering what's happened to his industry, we are very lucky.

Sorry to hear about your situation. The plant where I work is not giving Christmas bonus this year. Granted it wasn't much anyway but it would sure help out. They have cut out all overtime for full-time people and are giving it to the temporarys that are working there. They make less money than we do so they let them get all the overtime. I understand that they need the money too, but it still stinks. This stupid economy chose a bad time of year to go bust. I can't even get in the spirit of the season, I don't even have my tree up yet. I really don't feel like putting on up at all

That stinks.
I usually don't get a raise until April so we will have to wait and see what happens. I am also waiting to see about bonuses. I don't think that we will get one either.
Whatever happens I am just happy that I still have a job.Sue

I work for a non profit also and I hear ya. This happened to us last year. While a raise is always nice, I feel blessed to still have job that I like and am good at and where the fact that your boss and co workers would move mountains to help during personal and family crisis is worth more sometimes than a job where you get paid a lot but are basically on your own, don't bring personal problems to work.

I also work for a non-profit. We generally have to really fight for a 2% or 3% raise. The only real way to make more money is to postion hop. It is an on going joke between staff even when the economy is good. (People stay here mostly because they believe in what our agency's mission and to be fair, to a lesser extent, because the indiviual benefits are ver good.) They haven't said anythin to us yet about raises but we don't ever count on them coming through anyway.

My hubbyand his co workers were told no pay raise for this coming year also.
But yet their boss, his boss, and the office people are getting a 4 % raise.
And they keep upping the local property and school tax rates.....going up 4 % again. And they are doing reassements on properties this next year, to bring the values up 12 % higher so they can get more taxes out of people.
I am very thankful the hubby has a job. We will get by no matter what happens.
I got laid off in June this year, and have one week of unemployment left. Course having had part time jobs of 3 -4 hours a day, made for a small check, but it sure helped a lot.
The factory that closed, where my hubby worked 4 yrs ago, probably did us a favor in a round about way. His job now is $ 5 a hour less than that one was. Only bills we currently have is the house payment, and one truck payment. Any thing we buy now is cash. Other payments are just utilities and insurance.
We continue to make ends meet. I just have to find a way to tighten the food budget more.......sigh.....Last edited by ladytoysdream; 12-13-2008 at 08:55 AM.

I work non-profit also. We got a 3% COLA in January 2008 and they finally gave it to us in November. We won't see one next year and we might not see our small bonus either, although most people where I work think we will see just one more year of the bonus. We don't usually ever get individual raises, in fact the way the economy is going, I am just very happy my job is secure at the moment and I hope it continues to stay that way.

I didn't get my raise either..nor will I get a christmas bonus or a pie..My Dh's company layed off everyone in the shop except for 2 people..Dh was the lucky one to still be working..however his time has been cut 8hrs a month..they (the company) know's that my dh is able to do any position in the shop including the bosses position so that's why he was the one to stay..I'm worried that dh's company will fold now that we have a mortgage payment it won't be easy street for us anymore..however my Dad and two of my brother's all work for the union they are operating engineers where thanks to the Obama they will have ton's of work for years to come building and repairing all the roads and bridges..Dad mentioned to me this morning during a phone conversation that dh won't have to worry about work if his company folds as my family has pull and will get him into the union where he would make double the pay along with all the other benefit's the union has to offer..that is something my dh doesn't want to do but if he had no job then that's what he'll have to do..
