New from GA
I came across this site today while looking for homemade holiday gift ideas. What perfect timing! This year has been really hard on DH and I.. he is in the mortgage business (need I say more?) and while luckily still working and making a decent salary (lower than before, but I'm not complaining in this market), there were some scary months when he was changing companies a couple of times and we had 0 income. We luckily had savings to draw on, but we used the last of it this fall. This month is the first where we are literally living paycheck to paycheck, and we basically cannot afford our life! We used to have two credit cards between us that we would pay in full each month. This year we have acquired a wallet-full of cc's, and they are all at their limit (some have very low limits, thank goodness), plus other medical bills from two surgeries I had last year. Anyhow, that pretty much sums it up, I have been feeling so lost and hopeless, like we will never get our savings back, and I HATE the feeling of being a slave to our debt! I finally went back to work this fall after being a SAHM for 8 years when my youngest went to kindergarten. Last year we would talk about how if I worked PT, it would pay for the kids activities and "extra spending money" - what a laugh! We have cut out vacations, eating out, b'day gifts for one another (still for the kids we get them), etc. We both feel terrible about the situation, and also I know I feel ashamed to be a parent and in this mess with kids to raise.
I see I am rambling, but again, so glad to have found this site and to have read some very inspiring stories of getting out of debt!Last edited by halleyg; 12-14-2008 at 08:48 PM. Reason: still rambling..

Welcome to Frugal Village!!! This is a fabulous forum...lots of great frugal tips, advice and people. Don't feel ashamed "to be a parent and in this mess with kids to raise". It's wonderful you found this site. There are lots of excellent books (especially by Dave Ramsay) you can borrow from a library to start the road to a more frugal lifestyle. Remember that frugal living is a choice and a lifestyle. It's not easy, but extremely rewarding in the end.
An obstacle is what comes up when you lose sight of your goal.
