88 new taxes?
Have you seen the news at Fox, New Yorkers are due to have 88 new taxes to help increase the spending. I couldn't believe the things this guy want to tax, and how much it will raise the price of things that are high already!
http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2008Dec...kTaxes,00.html
"Much of the growth is revenue from 88 new or higher fees and will hit New Yorkers in many areas, from downloading music to sipping drinks to fishing.
One of the proposed hikes is a so-called "iPod tax," which would tax the sale of downloaded music and other "digitally delivered entertainment services" by 4 percent.
There also would be higher taxes on gas, taxi rides, cable and satellite TV service, cigars, beer, movie and sports tickets, and health spa visits, to name a few items.
Paterson seems to be fighting both obesity and budget deficits with a proposal for an 18 percent tax on soda and other sugary drinks containing less than 70 percent real fruit juice."
I just can't help but wonder what's next??????

That guy really bugs me for some reason. I didn't like Spitzer either. I think Paterson is trying to drive the taxes up based on one city in particular, not looking at the other citizens throughout the rest of Upstate NY. I can tell you that there aren't a whole lot of cities up there that are on the same cost of living scale that NYC and the five borroughs are.
He's a nut.
What he should be doing is getting every city that has city transit upgraded to commuter train to help people out. He needs to also put in a bullet train to take people from NYC to Albany, Albany to Syracuse, Syracuse to Rochester, Rochester to Buffalo, Buffalo to Elmira, Elmira to Binghamton, then Binghamton to NYC. I hate busing in that area and with the way the weather can be stupid, it would be great to help people get from one part of the state to the other when their hometowns are lacking in jobs.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

As if we aren't taxed enough
Brilliant plan. Economies in a slump so lets tax the hell out of them. That will get them to spend more. There was even a local news piece about taxing dairy farmers because of the methane gas excreted by their cows. Yes folks, they want to tax cow farts!

We were listening to this on the news last night.
We live in NJ and I told dh guess we'll be going into
NYC a whole lot less. :ceek1:
Costs a small fortune just to take a train and a cab to
where you're going in NYC now.
Never mind dinner and a show. :csmh:" May we never let the things we can’t have or don’t have or shouldn’t have spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. Well, I love living in NY, but as a Western NYer, it can sometimes be hard to do.

I been in NY all my life. And intend to stay here.
But this latest round of taxes is sure hard to swallow.
The one that pisses me off the most....is he wants to take away our star program , which gives a part off on our taxable amount of property. I bet our taxes go up another $ 1000 each year, if this goes through. We are barely making ends meet now.
The tax on soda is just plain stupid.....
And he also has seriously angered the Indians about selling cigarettes recently. They now have to tax the cigs, the non Indian person buys, when on the reservation land at a store.
I haven't seen the full list of the 88 items yet.
He wants to let go, over 3000 state employees. NY has 196,000 state employees according to our local newspaper story today.
He also plans on the early release of 1600 inmates.
Mr Patterson just bought a rug costing $ 20,000 or more, not sure the actual $$ amount for the mansion we hear. I think somebody better let him know, that if we have to tighten up our budgets, then he needs to practice what he preaches.

We are getting closer to leaving NY as the days go by. Cut spending, how about that?! Stop taxing me to death.
They wonder why business & younger people leave the state in droves? Well many will follow, Jack & I among them.

As a fellow New Yorker I have got to say just lop New York City off of New York State and that would save us fellow New Yorkers a lot of money. I cannot see how Paterson can possibly get some of this stuff through the legislature. I realize we have to do something with the deficit but don't tax us anymore than we are now. Get rid of some of the unnecessary programs and he can also take his $20,000. rug and stuff it where the sun doesn't shine. It is too late for my husband and I to pack up and leave NY due to the fact that he is retired and our house is paid for and our grandchildren are here. That being said I don't know how we will manage with pension and all of these new taxes if they go through. I guess it is time to watch and listen and contact our state representatives and let them know how we feel.

I been doing some more reading.
I think what he wants to do with the star program is to cancel the star rebate checks they been sending out each year. That I can live with. The part I was worried about , looks to be safe right now. Where the first $ 30, 000 of your assesed house value will be subtrated from the total value, and then the balance taxed. That's the part I was sweating.
I was just looking for the list of 88 items. Have not found it yet.
1600 inmates released does not bother me. Less for us to feed. Get them back to work helping the rest of us pay taxes.
Taxing regular soda......well tax all kinds of it then, not just some of it.
Not sure now if he bought the rug now, or it was given to the mansion. But still, that is not a good example to be setting for the rest of us.
Yup, time to get on the phone with our senators, etc.
