Definitely Mario Kart.
We do a lot of Rock Band and Guitar Hero -although those are more expensive and sold as kits.
I enjoy Mario Galaxy and DH enjoys Blazing Angels (a flying game you should be able to find rather cheaply)
Rayman is fun for the kids and Sonic & Mario Olympics is a good time, too!
You can purchase games on the Wii using an internet connection to play old school Super Mario Bros. 3 and Blades of Steel and all the NES games, too.

Mario Kart is a huge hit here as well. We have 3 kids, and have accumulated 4 controllers. If you have wireless internet at you house, connecting your wii is something fun to do, you can purchase inexpensive retro games and such. Other popular games around here are the Medal of Honor series, Harry Potter, Cooking Mama, and the sports pack game that came with an extra controller. That was a bargain, game plus controller for less than what some games cost.
Have fun!Erika

We are also picking up our Wii this week (love Layaway!). We got the WiiPlay (9 games plus a controller for $50). We want to get MarioKart because the kids love playing it on my moms and I believe it comes with Wii Sport.
After Christmas we are going to save up for a Wii Fit. The kids also like Animal Crossing on the PS2 and GameCube. So we'll probably get the City Folk one for the Wii eventually. I'd also like to get House of the Dead (zombie game) and the Resident Evil games.
Two other suggestions I've been given....
Get the charging dock, or you'll go through batteries like mad and the memory card that the Wii takes...don't buy the "Wii brand" for $20, it will take any old regular SD card. You can buy a 4G one at Target for $15, whereas the Wii brand one is 2G for $20. Ripoff!

I'll agree with the other posters that Mario Kart is a must! Wii Play is also great since it includes a controller. I also agree that you should get a charger for the wiimotes. We just have one charger for the 4 wiimotes, but it works well. We play wii often and have not yet needed a memory card. If I were you I'd also check out Gamespot.com. They have reviews and screenshots that have helped me decide on games.

Man. I had a huge post on some great family games for the Wii that we have and a whole bunch of other information....and the post deleted itself when I hit enter it just disappeared instead of posting. Yay.
Anyway, trying again...other than games that have already been posted try Family Game Night. I highly recommend that game. It has Yahtzee, Sorry, Sorry Sliders, Boggle, Connect Four and Battleship on it. You can play 1-4 players. It's a great way to play old school board games. You can play classic mode or 2 other different ways on each game. In Battleship, the bombs actually "hit" the ships and sink them.
I HIGHLY recommend this game and Mario Kart along with the others already posted. Guitar Hero is a fun family game as well.
About the batteries, we were told to get the lithium batteries like we use in our camera. We were able to get a huge bundle of them from Interstate Batteries really cheap and we may have to change batteries about every other month or so? So maybe you can check into that. If you do buy a Wii Fit do not waste your money on a rechargeable Wii fit board. According to the reviews they are having some issues with them, ours takes batteries like the controllers and I haven't had to replace them yet and I've had it for about 4 months and use it every other day. We've never had that much of a battery issue to be honest.
Also about the Wii points card. You can buy them wherever the Wii games are sold and they cost $20 for 2000 Wii points. You should never pay more than a dollar for a point. If you have a wireless broadband modem that's all you need to buy in order to download games, but if your modem is wired, you need to purchase the Lan Adapter ($20 sold where Wii's are or at Best Buy for sure) as well. If you have to get the Lan Adapter you just plug that into the back of the Wii and then connect to your modem, otherwise just connect to the internet on the Wii menu. Go to nintendo.com and click on virtual console to learn more about this. But you can use the code on the Wii points card to download new and old games. The new games they make for the virtual console range from 1000-2000 points (roughly $10-$20 money-wise) and the older games you can download to play on your Wii range from 500-1000 points (roughly $5-$10 money-wise). Which is a pretty good deal in my opinion. They have tons of the most popular older games for downloading, all of the Mario games, all of the Donkey Kong games, Legend of Zelda, Tetris, etc. They have a complete list on nintendo.com under the virtual console plus all of the information needed about Wii points.
If you would like a detailed description of every game made for the Wii along with screen shots and sometimes videos of the game you can go to nintendo.com. They have a complete list with all of the reviews and ratings of every Wii game. I have found it's easier to sit back and read up on the games there and keep a running list of games to rent or possibly buy. It's just a whole lot easier to do that instead of standing in the store for hours looking at the back of each game to see if it's worth getting or not or something that will interest us. This way you already know what you are looking for before you have to go out there in the big ugly world and hunt it down lol.
Hope you guys enjoy it, it will give your family hours of fun!

I will repeat what everyone else has said in that MarioKart is a must. Especially with a group playing all at once. We also like WiiPlay. We have a skiing game that is fun that works with the WiiFit. We haven't really enjoyed the Madden football game that we have. Definitely go with MarioKart though.

We have Mario Kart, Madden, Summer Sports pack and another sports package. Also, Tony Hawk (but there are things about that one I don't like) and Tiger Woods. Definetly get the rechargabe stations though! We went thru batteries like there was no tomorrow until we bought that.

We just bought Boom Blox and Animal Crossing City Folk. I even played Boom Blox and I hate video games! And my mom rented Animal Crossing for my son last weekend and was calling during the week to ask him how to do stuff and bragging about whatever it is you do on that game (LOL). So, I would suggest those to for the wide age groups.
