Greetings from the Midwest!
Hi! I am a 33-year-old wife, mom, and homemaker. I have been a fan of Sara Noel's syndicated newspaper column for years, and am excited to have finally joined the frugal village.
I have a deep cleaning issue I'm hoping one of you can help me with. My mom just purchased a new set of dishes and gave me her old ones, which I love! Because she has well water, there is a lot of rust build-up on the entire set of dishes. I am looking for a frugal alternative to try before resorting to soaking them in Iron Out or CLR. Also, because I currently have two full cans sitting in my cabinet under the kitchen sink, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried spraying dishes with generic Easy-Off oven cleaner to remove rust residue.
Any suggestions you can offer will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your help,
Missy :-)

Greetings, Missy!
What are the dishes made out of? I've seen great things done with a nylon scrubber and a paste of sugar and lemon juice.

Thanks for this tip...I'll give it a shot. BTW, they are stoneware made by Farberware, and the imprint on them states they are oven, dishwasher, and microwave safe.

Anything acidic would probably work - ACV or even carbonated soda, for that matter!
I'd let them soak for an hour or so, then go at them with the nylon scrubber and an abrasive (sugar, salt, etc) and see if the deposits have loosened up at all.

to frugal village.
I'm with madhen with the use of lemon juice. But if it doesn't work well enough, get bar keepers friend. If you'd like to help support Frugal Living by Sara Noel, my syndicated column, e-mail, write, or call the managing editor at your local newspaper and ask them to publish it in print or online. It's internationally syndicated through Universal Uclick. Thank you for supporting Frugal Village.

Years ago, when I was a restaurant manager, we would soak the plates overnight in the steamtable water mixed with cheap dishwasher detergent. They would come out looking like new. So you might try soaking them in very hot water and dishwasher detergent.
