Default Top brands to be closing in 2009

Here is an an article I found

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28452746/

Looks like we will see stores closing?

Wonder how the small stores will fair. I over heard a conversation with our local hardware store owner ( at Thanksgiving) They asked how he was doing. He answered with a solemn face that he would tell them the next week ( after Christmas sells I suppose).

Wonder how things will turn out

The end of the article mentions that store closing are not all bad for consumers it causes an economic Darwinism affect. The better stores ( business) survive.

I wish it was just a case of "the best stores survive" but I am afraid it might mean "the stores that can afford to, survive". I really fear for the small, locally owned businesses in this economy. We may wind up with the "best" big box stores, and some small retailers may come through this OK, but I see a bleak retail landscape in a couple years.

My sister and BIL are near a small town that draws a lot of tourists and day-trippers. When I visited it had lots of neat little antique, garden, gift, jewelry...those sorts of stores. Your typical upscale boutiquey main-street, old houses made over into fun and funky little shops. He said that in the last six months, many of the stores have closed and what is left are the restaurants.

I think its going to be the 'little guy' who's gonna hurt in the end. The bigger retailers may have to shut down a few of their stores but will survive.

I agree with Amy, the smaller stores just don't have the capital to stay open as long without turning a profit. It's unfortunate, but it's the way it goes. The big box stores, will stay in business as long as the corporate office say ok, and they can keep borrowing money, and they usually have very large lines of credit.

There will be a lot of restaurants close as well. I know of 2 that have left our area so far.

I know that Linens-N-Things went out here, as did Randy River. I haven't heard of any other stores closing their doors in Calgary as of yet. The recession hasn't hit as hard here, but it's definitely felt. Mainly here, it's been strikes and people complaining about wages. I never could understand how people can complain about wages when they still have a job...

This past week we have lost (like many other places) Linen'n'Things, Garlic Jim's, The Tux Shoppe, a scrapbooking store and a few others from the mall.
I have noticed the locally owned stores have changed the hours they are open.
On the flip side out local Albertson's is gearing up for a major remodel.

We are seeing some of our smaller stores in our area closing already.

Our local Cold Stone ice cream shop went out of business about 6 months ago.

We noticed yesterday that our favorite sandwich shop had a sign that they were closing due to "economic conditions beyond there control".

It's really sad to see the smaller stores unable to survive in this climate

The town I live in which is pretty big lost a Value City, a Kmart and a Circuit City. Who would have ever thought they would close. Hopefully the economy will improve. I hate to see anyone lose their jobs. Thank goodness mine and DHs jobs are pretty secure.
