Well, you know what else they say... "Life is like a box of chocolates...a $492,798 box of chocolates!"

Holy cow, that is a load of benjamins! That is over 5 times what I paid for my house...for plates!

I find it tasteless that with the economy the way it is, she goes out and spends that much on plates. Seriously, talk about alienating your people.

hmmmmmm......... Ok, I'll refrain myself from making a comment like "isn't there something else that Mrs. Obama should be putting that money towards?" you know, like one of their programs on the south side of Chicago?............ oops?......did I just say that out loud?

    OUCH!!!!!!!

Isn't there something more wise that SHE should be spending that money on?
and why is she buying new china in the first place? Isn't she leaving the White House????

One thing's for sure: she just spent enough money for the rest of us to be able to be frugal and save and make up for what we are not contributing to the economy!!!!!!

Since it was paid for by the White House Historical Association (nonprofit group) and not by taxpayers, I don't care what they spend.

I agree. But it just seems that it is being unveiled at the last minute of the Bush Administration as a sort of a hah! to the Obama's. I don't know if it was intentional but just the timing.

Non profit or not, I think it's totally tasteless (not to mention wasteful) to be spending that obscene amount of money during one of the worst economies since the Great Depression.

I'm not sure I understand ~ many first ladies do this. Michele Obama can do it, too, if she so desires.

I have a soft spot for museums, historical associations, etc., and have absolutely NO problem with them spending THEIR OWN money on whatever they see fit. I would hate to see them stop adding to their collections. I think we would all be poorer for that. Oh well, we'll just have to agree to disagree

I know where you're coming from, and I respect your position. I do believe it's a tradition for them to do this, the Clinton's did it before the Bush's took office as well, I believe.

The timing is really bad though.
