Chalkboard and Magnetic Paint!!
Okay, so I don't know if anyone knows this or not, but there is paint on the market that once painted onto a wall becomes a chalkboard or magnetic board/wall. I was thinking that this would be a good idea for the kids play/family room in the basement. I am just wondering if anyone has tried it, knows someone who has, or has heard anything good/bad about it!!
Thanks in advance!!

I had a friend do this to her daughter's closet door. She told me that the one thing she didn't think about was all of the chalk dust that would be falling into the floor. I guess what I'm trying to say is either plan to vaccum there constantly or install a "chalk holder" that will catch the dust.

I have heard of people using the chalkboard paint, and they've loved it. If I had a place to use it for the kids, I would.
I am curious to know how people like the magnetic paint and will be checking back for replies.

I have used the chalk board spray. That worked great, its about 10 bucks a can. I know they have it in the quarts and gallons. I think crayola makes it.

I've used the caulkboard paint on the back of my garage door. I keep track of whats in my deep freezer. I did have to do 3 coats for good coverage. As for the magnetic paint I've used it on construction jobs at Kinder Cares and the disney daycare for employees. Worked good but also took several coats to look good.

Another idea is to get fiberglass shower board - it is pretty cheap at Home Depot, but you can also get it from someone who is remodeling - or a big mirror (we use an old bathroom mirror) and use dry erase markers. Less chalk dust mess. My toddlers like drawing themselves, circling their eyes and trying to trace their body.
Oh, and my hubby has a wall that he drilled the shower board on and uses it to help manage his tasks/short-term and long-term projects.Last edited by rasilla; 01-11-2009 at 04:59 PM.

Dry erase markers also work great on sliding doors or windows. My kids use them to practice spelling words or math problems.

I've used the chalkboard paint. It takes several coats to cover. It's actually cheaper to buy a sheet of chalkboard if you are just looking to put one up, but I used it to paint the closet door in my daughter's room.
I was going to get the magnetic paint, but it was so expensive compared to the cost of just getting a piece of sheet metal. I never got around to that project anyway.

My DD wants a chalkboard/dry erase board for her play room. We haven't looked into the cost just yet, but I have known several people who say it was a good investment for a child's play/bed room.
