Ok, so they are going to attempt to reduce carbon emissions and waste by printing 24,500 leaflets and visiting 24,500 homes to distribute those leaflets. Leaflets that explain the difference between "best by", "use before", and "sell by" dates.
One imagines they are not walking to all 24,500 homes. Perhaps within neighborhoods.
Maybe a better use of the money would have been to hire someone to make a poster that could be displayed at the grocery store explaining the different terms and their meanings, then print and mail them. Or even to mail the leaflets instead of door knocking. I don't know you, you knock on my door, I'm already irritated. Then you want to tell me how to behave in my kitchen?
Actually, I think this already HAS reached our shores. I'm sure I heard a story about it on NPR...something about people now having sorted recycling, trash, yard waste and NOW compostible kitchen scrap bins too. There were door knockers for that program.

I heard about this yesterday, I am enjoying hearing the domestic news at the minute because there is something weird and wonderful happening every day it seems. I think it's to cheer us up during the recession! I think there's a "random policy generator" somewhere and it's just throwing all this stuff out there to see if anyone will bite.

I'm a bit disappointed it's not in my area though, I would love them to visit me! They would of course have to bring their own tea bag as I would hate to generate more waste by using one of my own, lol.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

While I think this program is ridiculous, the point about the environmental impact of wasted food is not. Growing food with fossil-fuel derived fertilizers, packaging it in plastic, and transporting it all over the place only to have it rot in landfills, creating large amounts of methane that contributes to global warming, is the worst kind of waste and worth combating. I just don't think cutting down a forest to trees and driving people all over the British Isles to make the point is the way to do it.

I think I'd enjoy watching them dig through my trash trying to find food that's been thrown out. There isn't any. Unless they have any bright ideas for crab shells and chicken fat, because that's the only food-related waste I trashed. Everything else is eaten or composted.

Would not find anything in my trash, any scraps go to the chickens, if the chickens cant eat them they go to the garden dirt, the burnables get burnt and the rest goes out, which is not much!
I did not see anything saying they were doing this anywhere in the US, probably a good thing!

Nah, don't have them bring their own teabag. Give them a used one. We should be using up those leftover tea leaves, right?
