I'm sure thats only one of thousands of families in the same situation. Sounds like the kids have their heads screwed on right. Working, saving their money and buying clearance.

"The xxx family lives lean in their five-bedroom, three-bathroom house with its $440 a month mortgage."
Gosh, I'd forgotten how much cheaper it was to live in the South! You can't get a one-bedroom apartment here for under about $1,000 a month.

My 16yo dd has had the worst time trying to find a job. She's applied at a dozen places and not one nibble. I keep telling dh (who is really pressuring her to get a job) she's competing with adults who can work whatever/as many hours as the place will give them. Employers are going to choose those people over a high school student who's hours they have to work around.

What an inspiration! THey didn't give up, they did what they have to do! Next fall, ds is going to take a job and earn some money. He can pay for his extras, and hopefully learn to manage his money. We are thinking having him ref in hockey or ringette, he can decide how many shifts he wants a month and schedule around his school and cadets.
Also increases his rrsp potential by starting working young.

It's nice to hear a story about a family just doing what needs to be done and surviving in this economy. I realize that there are many people really struggling out there but sometimes, its their pride that gets in the way. I know a lot of people who complain bitterly about not having enough money, losing their jobs, etc and yet, when they need clothes, they go get the designer duds instead of hitting the thrift store because they are too proud to buy secondhand.

2012 Financial goals
- make an extra $15k over and above any flying pay (1705/15000)
- pay an extra $1750 off my mortgage (557/1750)
- bring EF back to $10k - $3533 left to save
- avoid lifestyle inflation
- improve investment plan (change accounts) - *grumble grumble* Bank made a mistake, need to re-do paperwork
The Financial Goals I've achieved: increased RSP contribution to $300/mth, posted budget on FV for review, saved $1600 to go on vacation

You do, what you have to do when the situation warrents it. When we were young my hubby took a job as a bartender & walked to work after he was laid off from his factory job (think late 70's). Prior to being laid off he had hitch hiked back & forth to work (40 miles one way) for almost a year, before we could afford to buy a car.

I just think it's sad that it is noteworthy that he did what needed to be done. That should be the norm. I have also never understood why it would hurt someone's pride to take honest work. If you're doing your best and supporting your family what's not to be proud of?
