Anyone here into geocaching?
Dh and I are trying to find more outdoorsy family type things to do. Geocaching seems to fit perfectly. Does anyone here do this as a family? If so any tips? Thanks!

Hi,
Geocaching sounds like fun on the surface, but too many of the caches are in public places where you're supposed to sneak around and not alert anyone, or off on private land where you're not even supposed to go. Some cachers are respectful of boundaries, others are rebels and fruitcakes.
But if you narrow down the caches to ones left by responsible parties it can be a fun little treasure hunt. People leave all kinds of odd things behind, and the log books often have funny notes. But since anyone can "join in" the quality can vary.
If a spot is familiar enough, I'll look for the cache with no GPS. That's even more of a challenge!
Check out geocaching.com for caches in your area.
Though, you know, you're also allowed to just go outside and have a nice hike without the extra hassle.Scott Virtes

My parents started doing the geocaching last year. They love it, and have a really good time doing it!
My mom said she thought it was a little confusing the first couple times, but my Dad was the one who knew what they were doing. And they had fun with it!

DH and I go geocaching in warmer weather and have a blast. It adds a scavenger hunt element to hiking and biking and we love it.
I haven't come across any caches hidden on private property as mentioned upthread, nor have I encountered any "fruitcakes" or "rebels" most of the 'cachers I've encountered are families with young kids or couples.
There are a ton of caches hidden in State Parks around here.Last edited by The Muse; 02-02-2009 at 09:20 AM.

We do Letterboxing with the grandkids and have a ball without having to buy the GPS equipment. There are tons on public land everywhere in the country.
The only expense is for stamps and ink pads, but that's fairly nominal. The grandkids made their own stamps from erasers.

We've tried letter boxing, but the clues were missing. We will take it up again in the spring. My family LOVES being outside.

We made a "family" stamp from an eraser and the kids ea. made their own stamps.
We only ran into nice people while doing this. It has been a blast. We hid our own letterbox and I am now rennovating it. The box we made was in honor of both grandfathers military service.Truck paid off 12/07(paid in full)

Thanks for all of your responses! I'll have to check out letterboxing, I haven't heard of that before. Geocaching.com has a ton of caches in our area. Quite a few in parks so I'm not worried about trespassing. Thanks for the warning though.
