Default I am so jealous of my SIL

My SIL has been out of work (this is not why I am jealous) for a year now. She just got another 20 week extension on it. Her unemployement check is $5/hr more than my working pay, PLUS I pay her $5/hr to watch my daughter while I go to work (which means I take home very little- maybe $20/day).

    *sigh* Life is so unfair!!!

    Ain't life grand sometimes?! lol

Just a question, can she earn money while being on unemployment? I'm not sure...I've never been in that situation.

Well look on the bright side she can watch your dd for 20 more weeks. Then maybe when she goes back to work you can stay home and watch her kids?

Here in Ca its not illegal to to earn money while on umemployment. If you are use to working full time and your job cuts your hours back to 32 or under hours a weeks. They will pay you the 60% of thhe hrs you are not working.........DDL is doing that right now........

When my brother was on unemployment, he had to report any income he made. That income was taken out of his unemployment check.

When I lived in Maine I had unemployment. I didn't have to claim babysitting money, yard sale money, gifts etc. That was 15 years or so ago though.

It must depend on what state you are in. Some here are saying that you can't earn a wage and draw unemployment but in WV you can. I work a seasonal job (April - October) and I am drawing unemployment through this winter. I can work and earn up to 60.00 a week and still collect my full unemployment check each week(which is 54.00 a week). I have to report anything I make while working and if I make more than 60.00 a week I don't collect anything from unemployment for that week. I don't know if that 60.00 is standard for everyone or if what you are allowed to earn and still collect is based on what you earned while working.

In Nov. my boss asked me to come in and work four days the week of Thanksgiving. I made 167.00 so I got nothing for that week but have gotten the 54.00 a week every week since.

It would be illegal for her to work and NOT report it to unemployment though.

Here in Illinois, you can make money while on unemployment, but you must report it. If you make less than what you make for unemployment, they basically pay you the difference. If you make more than the unemployment amount, then they pay you nothing.

I have been a stay at home mom for 18 months now, and I just got a notice stating that I can re-up my unemployment since I am still not working! I of course, didn't go claim it, since I am choosing not work, but I wonder how many stay at home mom's did go claim it!

gee, you'd think the sil would be good enough to watch her niece for free. or you could bring her meals or something, but charging a family member when you're already getting money.....that ain't family imo.
don't worry, it'll work out for ya.

I'd rather pay someone I trust that provides receipts (so I can claim it as an expense) than family who is only in it for the money and doesn't provide receipts. It wouldn't sit well with me knowing that I'm only making $20 a day when she's earning most of the money and not claiming it. ...But maybe that's just me.

I have friends that were let go from our place of employment over a year ago they are still collecting unemployment. They are hoping all the time for the extentions. Sometimes it bothers me and then I realize that I am lucky to still have a job.

Also here in MA you can earn up to a small % working before you loose any of your unemployment. Also if they cut your hours back due to the economy you can collect.

The world does work funny sometimes, doesn't it?

In Michigan you can earn up to half of your unemployment benefit and still collect full benefits...after that your unemployment benefit starts reducing depending upon income earned.

Yeah, your SIL has got it made all right. Around here unemployment benefits last 6 months and then you are SOL. You find a new job or you learn to live without the money. It's a real incentive to get people off their behinds and looking for work. I've never heard of anyone getting an extension on those benefits. Maybe that's why this state isn't one of the ones that is going bankrupt.

And if the state is going to be paying people month after month after month, those people ought to be sitting downtown at a desk doing all that government paperwork that is so backed up.

Whether you're supposed to report the income or not, I think it's unscrupulous to collect unemployment benefits when you are working some kind of job.
