I Want To Throw Up!
Let me explain. I work for the Federal Govenment. I will have 29 years service in April. I was in Accounting for 20 years and due to the BRAC my office moved from Rock Island Il to Columbus, OH.
I was lucky enough to be picked through a Priority Placement Program for a job here on the installation. I went from a GS-08 Supervisor to a GS-05 Office Assisant. However I retain my grade and pay for two years and after that I get 150% of the top step as close to my current pay as possible for life.
Here is the throwing up part.... A woman I worked with in Accounting is now in another department as the Budget Manager. She has an openning for a GS-05 lead in GS-07 Admin Assistant. However, the one thing about the job is it is a temporary position not to exceed one year but is extendable up to 5 years. I was under the impression that I could move into this position and keep my current career status. Which is very important with 29 years. In the private sector I would be considered vested.
So anyway this lady has been moving mountains to get me in this position. This morning I got an offer for the job from personnel but it is being offered as an Excepted postion. Which means I lose my career status and will be treated as if I have no Government experience and am being hired off the street. So if there is a reduction in force I am the first to go.
I CAN'T DO THAT!!!!!
I was under the impression (from another job I was up for) that if my current supervisor put in writing that he was willing to take me back if my new job were to expire, I would be able to keep my career status. That was exceptable, especially since within that five years the position would most likely be made permanent and no problems. Without that guarentee, in the economy and with my years already put in I can't chance it.
I am just heart sick. I feel so badly that I will have to tell her I cannot take this job after all she did to get it offered to me. I need to call personnel and see if things cannot be changed with a guarantee that I could come back to my old job if needed. If not I have to call her and tell her I can't accept. Nothing in this world ever comes easy does it?
Thanks for letting me vent!Jeanne

I don't blame you for feeling that way at all, you should certainly watch out for that status you've earned rightfully after all of this time and not jeopardize it one bit!
Good luck

Wow! That is tough. I wouldn't make any moves without that guarantee in writing though! This IS the government we're talking about here, after all!
Good luck to you!

Wow. I definately wouldn't make the move if I couldn't be sure that I would keep my status. I hope it works out for you. ((HUGS))

Wow, I am so sorry you are going through this. Are you sure the government isn't trying to cheat you out of your retirement?
