that happened to my dad once so I always double check my stubs now. It's amazing the errors one can find. good luck on paying it and building back up the EF. glad you at least had it and you made interest on your money not the other way around.

That is horrible news, I'm so sorry! Was there no way to tell that they weren't being taken out? My paycheck has the gross amount I am paid then the take home amount. The difference goes to taxes.

The money you were saving for your families emergency goes to the government for them to spend on someone else who didn't sacrifice in order to have an EF. How sad!

I always thought is was illegal to not take out federal tax but dont quote me on that. Now is the time to make sure you DH fills out the form about withholding taxes from his paychecks.

The amount of federal that gets withheld depends on how many you claim. The more you claim, the less gets taken out. I have an employee who claims 6 & no federal is withheld.

Sorry to hear about that! As one who does payroll taxes, make sure you are looking at each paystub. Make sure your filing status and exemptions are accurate. We just had someone call in that had chosen the exempt status meaning no Federal taxes were taken out. Turns out, they chose the option in error on their employee portal. So, they are going to owe Federal taxes for the entire year, much like in your situation. Again, sorry to hear about the unexpected tax burden.
