Need new mattress
I apologize if this is not the right place to post this. My dh and I need a new mattress and do not want to spend alot. Our current mattress was used when we got it and is probably about 20 yrs old. Dh has back problems and we are looking for a good firm , inexpensive mattress.
My bff says I will have to pay around $2000. If that is the case we can just sleep on the floor for free(LOL).
Can anyone give suggestions on an inexpensive brand of firm mattress. I am not looking for one that lasts another 20 yrs.
Thanks in advance....Truck paid off 12/07(paid in full)

Well if you want a good mattress then your going to need to spend some money. Serta and Sealy make the best mattresses in my opinion. If a furn. store is having a sale you could get a queen size set on sale for maybe $400-$500 range. Or if you only need the matress, if your box spring is good. Dont buy pillowtop because once the pillowtop wears down then its very uncomfortable.
Mattressess are something you should be willing to spend some money on

i don't have a 'brand' to recommend but check your classifieds coz we always have people selling brand new mattresses (still wrapped in plastic) for really ridiculous prices...(i mean as in low prices)....

We have a sleep number bed that is wonderful. I recently saw an ad for their basic model for $500 for a queen size. The adjustability is great. My DH has back problems too and he can adjust his side to meet his needs for that day and I can keep my side nice and soft. I would look into it if you have that much to spend.

Personally, I can's see throwing good money after bad for cheap mattreses. But then, we have Tempurpedic...money well spent and no regrets.

Okay, I'm going out on a limb here, but . . . .
Some time back we needed a new mattress since DH was having back and sleep problems from the old one. At any rate, we priced them and started saving up for one.
Came the dawn when DH said he just could not stand it another night, so we went to WalMart and bought a queen size, pillow top air mattress by Ozark. (The one that stands as high off the floor as a regular bed - not the single layer one.) We figured we could keep it for camping later.
That was a year and a half ago, and we have never looked back. For around $80 we got a mattress as comfortable as a sleep number bed (which is just a glorified air mattress, after all). DH's back problems disappeared and he's able to sleep comfortably through the night.
Every time we try testing regular mattresses to replace it, the kvetching from DH is so severe I give up on the idea.
This might not work for people who really, really like dust bunnies or who have cats with claws, but it's sure worked for us.
Just a thought.

Is your box frame still good??? We needed a new mattress about a year ago and only needed the top mattress as our box spring was still good....for us to only buy the top mattress our price dropped almost $200!!!
Just something to think about!!

I thank you all for the ideas. First thought, anything would be better than what we have now. But I don't want to throw away money or waste it on a bad mattress either, it's just that we only have about $500 to spend. I think I will look at the box springs to see it they look sturdy. I'm not sure what I'm looking for.... But if I could get away with buying just the top mattress that would be great.

I say buying a good mattress when you have back problems is a good investment. I agree to test out a lot of mattress in different price ranges you may be surprised.

check out IKEA, they have some really good prices on mattresses. However, if it were me and I had $500 to spend and could get a sleep number for that I'd definately check that out first.

If you use your present box springs, it will probably invalidate any warranty that comes with the mattress, something else to consider. And it does seem to be a true story that box springs are made to work with the actual configuration of the mattress they match with.
I bought a mattress just this week, and finally went with a firm Serta Perfect Sleeper, but it wasn't cheap. I too consider a matress a good investment, but you can get a good mattress without going all the way to the top of the line. Look for sales as someone said. They seem to happen pretty often.
I would very much recommend that you spend a good bit of time doing some internet "mattress homework." There's a lot of information that can be helpful when you shop, and it will explain all the different options.
Good luck with it. I think mattresses are one of the hardest things to shop for. I'm glad I'm finished!Donna
