Pop or Ice Tea: Switching to Pepsi and Snapple. No Coke for me.
Well I'm not a crazy drinker of pop.
Mostly because of HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup)
Looks like Dr Pepper/Snapple and Pepsi are seeing the light and switching to sugar base sweetener instead of HFCS.
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/20...reshes-itself/
Now I am unsure why Pepsi is only doing it on a temporary basis.
http://munchmonster.com/main/pepsi-i...gar-sodas.html
So...when shopping.
The one on sale might not be the best product for your money. Especially If you consider what High Fructose Corn Syrup does to your body in the long run.
What are your thoughts? Would you pay slightly more for natural sugar pop or ice tea?

Yes good move on their part.
Pepsi will be running about 800,000 cases of "Retro" flavors on a limited basis. Hope everyone likes it and it stays
As we all know about HCFS.

Thanks for the back-to-sugar information. I wonder if the change to sugar didn't have something to do with the price of corn and therefore HFCS. I believe they went to HFCS when it was so much cheaper than sugar....

I've apparently been living under a rock. I know that too much sugar of any kind isn't good for you. Why is HFCS so bad? I googled it, but there is a lot of conflicting information.

I cut back on pop quite some time ago. I could drink glass after glass of it if I let myself (but I can't stand diet pop). I drink unsweetened tea at home now, and pop when I'm out somewhere. So I don't drink nearly as much anymore, and I wouldn't pay more to avoid HFCS pop when I'm out. The only time I have pop at home is if we have company (family) over. Then we have a few flavors available. We usually always buy store brand pop, but have a couple of 2-liters of name brand available for company if that's what they prefer.

I'm sure if you go to the corn refiners association you will find only good things about HFCS. It's "all natural".
The reason why HFCS is cheaper than regular sugar is because of the huge subsidies given to corn growers and ADM. If you calculate the 44 Billion in subsidies, I'm not sure that HFCS would be cheaper than sugar from beets or cane. We put tariffs on cane coming other countries.
Oh and they found mercury in it lately...
With this I leave you with this commercial by the same association.
It looks strangely familiar to the playbook from the cigarette manufacturers!

It's not like them switching to a sugar-based sweetener for their drinks are going to reverse the mercury-based disabilities they've giving to people in the process.
I stopped drinking pop because a) it was too expensive ($5.00 for a 12-pack here), b) the HFCS thing and its correlation to mercury, c) too much caffeine during the day makes you tired, surprisingly and d) it dehydrates you.
I noticed when I went to mango drinks, my energy level went up because I was getting more water into my system.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

As of recently I've seen some news articles saying HFCS has Mercury in it. Not to mention... HFCS leads to Diabetes and Gaining weight. It's in just about everything these days.. and it's not good for you. Sugar is bad for you too but not even close to as bad as HFCS.
I'm hoping this switch stays but it's a hard one for consumers to by into because they are used to a specific taste that HFCS has. It's more sweet. I am happy about this. Maybe I'll have to try a pepsi now. Not that I'm a huge soda drinker but I'd like to see how different it is.Last edited by writtenonmybody; 02-21-2009 at 10:22 PM.

That will be good. maybe other producers will follow their lead. Like ketchup.. it is really hard to find ketchup that doesn't have hfcs in it. The kids and dh don't drink soda and I only drink diet (I can't stand drinking regular soda now... doesn't taste right. lol). We have reduced the amount of hfcs down to a minimum... we use pancake syrup and ketchup. You can't even buy bread or even some of the better cereals (like Honey Bunches of Oats) without it being in them. And I've been on the corn refineries page before. What a crock. It's "all natural", "made from corn". You know what I tell people? Well, the coca plant is all natural in its regular form but then you process it becomes cocaine. So, their argument could be used to support legalization of cocaine right? lol.
Oh and the Pepsi article mention Jones soda having regular sugar. That is some good stuff there!! We've actually got some really good regional sodas in the northeast.

All of the ketchup that I've bought in Canada has been with sugar, not HFCS. It tastes way better too.

The thing with Coca Cola is that back when they first started producing it, it had cocaine in it.
I do also hope that other companies follow their lead, as well. Perhaps once they start doing it, we'll all see the rates of childhood obesity, diabetes, autism, ADHD, etc decline.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

I stopped drinking pop regularly within the last 2 years. Not sure exactly why nor when but I did slowly stop. I have it when out as a treat if I feel the urge but usually have water with lemon. Pop 'fills' me up but sometimes you need that good burp lol. I have it at home for guests but even then...its not being consumed. Sometimes to change it up, I'll have unsweet iced tea with lemon...refreshing!
