Default My dd5 is too cute

Somewhere along the line, my little one has become a frugal diva. We have been looking for a desk, tried freecycle, didn't find one. Looked online found but no one emailed back. Tried new stores, found one for $600! She asked how much, i told her, and her eyes bugged out, "Forget mama, that's too 'spensive'." Which it was indeed.

We did find a used one.

We went to the store, grocery store and I asked her if she wanted a certain snack for her lunches. She asked me how much it was, she thought about it, I told her I had a coupon so we'd pay less.

She thought about it a moment. Asked how much the animal crackers were, $1 less than the other. And she chose the animal crackers. Her comment was - "Let's save the crouton til those are on sale, they are too 'spensive. and we can get them then".

Now she is asking me often how much things are and asking me "is that too 'spensive mama?"

I hate to make her think that we can't afford to get things. I'm not sure she's understanding that it's not because we can't it's because we choose not to.

She started this after she got gift cards, she wanted a toy. She shopped hard and long. She wanted as much as possible for her money, even convinced her sisters to split the cost of a Wii game so she could still get the toy she wanted..lol.

I have 2 thrifty kids, and 2 spenders. Not sure what went right and wrong there..lol

WOW, I'm so impressed, and jealous. I wish I had had that kind of patience and planning at that age!

My girls are about the same, but if there is something they want badly enough they'll save. 3 of the 4 American Girl dolls in this house were saved for (over a year for each), and the DS.

Sometimes I try to illustrate things for them by comparing. For example, they'll be looking on e-bay for furniture for their dollhouse. I'll say "yep, that's a nice piece. It's the right era and colors for what you are planning. But it costs the same as that last library fine I had to pay".

Hey Presto! No more library books under the beds!
