I have had this happen too. I work in the food service industry as a trainer and one thing I stress is "never ask the guest if they want their change- assume they do." Other wise it makes us seem like a truck stop (no offense - I have worked at one) when we are supposed to be a higher end establishment. I am really hard on folks who do a crappy job when we go out and make sure to bring it up with management. No satisfaction- go to the next level- corporate or employee relations (most big chains have them). Times are tough for everyone so they should jump at the chance to fix a bad behavior and keep guest rather than lose them.

He came back, "Oh, I thought you'd put in a $10 and the rest was for me". First of all, they shouldn't assume that MY change is a tip. Secondly, they really need to pay attention to cash sales.

Ha ! same thing happened to me on holiday , I paid a $35 lunch bill with a $100 travellers cheque and he asked me if i wanted any change !!!.........and then the cheeky so and so short changed me by $1 , but couldnt face anymore confrontation lol

I would have raised a HUGE stink at that. That is THEFT, period. If they wouldn't return it, I'd have gone to the owner, and if that didn't happen, there are "troubleshooters" at media stations and had them do a story on it.

NO one decides how much of a tip they get. Period. It's based on service provided and decided by the customer. If they are deciding the tip, they aren't providing good service.

Around here when the waitress takes your money she always says, "I'll be right back with your change." That give you the option to tell her to keep it, or get your change and leave the appropriate tip.

I would have have been simply stunned if the person behind the counter didn't give me my change back!

I think being cheated out of change is just wrong, no matter why.
But I often wonder how many people walk out without thinking twice when they get back to much change? I was shopping the other day and the lady gave me change for a 20, I let her count it out to me and ask her why she gave me all the change.......she looked at me like I had grown horns! I had only given her a 10, she was mad at first thinking I was growling that she had cheated me......I had to TELL her she had given me to much CHANGE! She was in total shock, that I would tell her and not just walk out with the extra money.
I don't want to be cheated, but then again I don't want to be a cheat either!

I think its shameful that the lady tried to cheat a kid, and she didn't think a thing of it. It was the kids money, and she wouldn't have thought twice cheating the little girl out of it besides NOT having what she ordered!
