I'm Worried About Hubby's Job
Although Hubby is retired, he still teaches for two local universities. He's been at University 1 for several years, teaching regular classes and also some special classes that are funded through an outside source.
He just began at University 2 last fall. He had not even applied there; they just called and begged him to please please come teach for them. The classes there are also the special classes that are funded by the very same outside source.
Because of that funding, the pay rate for each university is exactly the same and comes exactly at the same time. However, a big problem is developing.
From August to November, there was no problem with the pay. Each university paid him on time. In December, University 1 paid him on time (which was before Christmas), but University 2 did not pay until the first week of January. And as of now, the January payment has not been made. When we inquired about it, the reply was that we will get the January payment at the end of February. It's not just us; all of the faculty that teach in this special program at University 2 are in the same boat. We are just better off than they are as it is not our sole source of income.
I thought that we should inform the outside source of funding that no payroll was being made. Hubby wants to wait and see. He really likes everything about the job with University 2 and enjoys the people with whom he works. But right now, he's doing it for free, and I don't think that can last.

I don't really have any advice but I do want to offer some hugs for you! I hope things work out and they get the payroll straightened out. It would be hard to lose a job that you love!

Is it a possibility that the outside source of funding was a victim of Bernie Madoff? If so, they're scarmbling to find funds to keep things running.
There's a list of victims here:

If they're not on this list, there are a number of other Ponzi's coming to light that you could look up.
My very best to you. Let us know if you find out anything.

Thanks, Milly. The Madoff scheme could be a possibility. But it makes me wonder why University 1 (which receives the very same funding from the very same source) is still making payroll. Hubby says there are too many variables here that we don't know about.

Hubby's right, there are too many variables.
My brother works for a major eastern university and I know that different schools get funds from the same source at different times. Maybe University #1 received their funding prior to the SHTF, so to speak.

I hope it all gets worked out for you guys. It defintely would be fustrating to be working for 'free'. Doesn't make sense if they are making payroll at university 1 but not university 2, especially if its all thru the same funding.

OK. It's the last working day of February. University 1 paid salary on time. Still nothing from University 2 for any of the faculty there. Now they are two months behind.

Good news...... sort of. Today we received a check for 1 1/2 months salary from University 2. There was no explanation, no apology. So now Hubby has decided that he needs to call them and find out what is going on.

Hopefully everything will be straightened out soon. That is really awful that people have to go that long without a paycheck. Let us know what is happening!
