Default and deliver us from temptation...

Ok, so I'm going to the biggest sewing Expo in the U.S. Saturday. My friend bought tickets for both of us..

And every vendor of ultimate niftyness in the U.S. will be there..

What should I buy that helps frugality?
And what should I avoid because it's just a gimmick.

Whenever I want to buy something, I wait until the next day. I find that if I put it off one day, I usually really don't need it. It would be hard to "put it off" at a vendor type situation, but maybe you could do a version of it. Don't buy right away, walk away and think about it first. That way you won't make an impulse buy. And you can go back later.( I do this at craft fairs).

I'm new here, but sew fairly often.

I think I would try to inventory my sewing supplies and see what I need. If they had something I needed and it was a good price, I'd buy it, otherwise not. Usually after I go through my stuff and see what I have, I discover I don't want or need much- just basics like seam rippers and thread. I misplace seam rippers constantly. My dream is to have a quart-sized mason jar full of them. Then maybe I could find one when I need it.

I would go with the attitude that I don't NEED anything. Then I would look and see what type of products are available. I would definitely thing long and hard if I needed it or wanted it. Then I would pick up what I though would help me save money in the long run.

I have been to the Sewing Expo and most of it is gimmicks. Just go and enjoy looking at things, see the exhibits and the fashion show and the demos. Like shopping for anything else, if you are already familiar with the prices of things, it will help you spot bargains. There are not a lot of bargains at the show, they are trying to sell you the newest gadgets and the latest fashion fabric. The most frugal thing is to not buy any of it.

Oh, boy! I would surely be tempted there.

Speaking of seam rippers, I just wanted to share that since I bought the scalpel type, I will never go back to the standard seam ripper. It has replaceable blades and works so much better. I cannot recommend this sewing notion highly enough. Mine is all metal from Clotilde's catalog. Here's a photo of a similar one:

My brain is not big enough to hold both the thought of a sewing expo and the thought of frugality at the same time.
