I like that her homeroom teacher was supportive of her topic despite it being controversial...I just wish they hadn't worded it as her teacher's support being "despite being pro-choice".
    Gratitude.

That is a really heavy topic for a 12 yo. I just don't see it being her choice of speech. It was extremely well written for her age.

But good for her for speaking about what SHE believes. And for her teacher supporting her growth as a speaker despite the fact she had different views.

I've had 13-14 year old students present similar speeches and yes, they wrote and spoke with passion. I'm glad she was given the chance to speak her heart and mind.

    Thank you for posting that.

That was an amazing speech. I believe that she wrote this herself. I myself used to participate in public speaking all the time, and wrote speaches on topics such as capital punishment, child abuse etc, even at as young an age as 12.

    She did an exceptional Job!!

My niece was purely passionate and could have written a wonderful speech on this subject at 12. Good for the teacher too, alot of teachers would have and have shushed their students for their views such as this.

It's nice to see someone that young who has not given in to the "political correctness" bull they are pushing in schools these days. Good for her and I hope she doesn't cave in to the pressure of adults who feel the need to ridicule honesty and conviction. The girl has a spine and she's using it!!!

Despite disagreeing with the opinion entirely...good for her! I don't expect people to agree with my opinion so long as they don't expect me to agree with theirs.

Good for her! I'm glad the teacher didn't trample on her free speech rights.

I'm glad she was given the chance to present her topic of choice. She did so with great passion and maturity. With the topic being so controversial, I wish they hadn't said that the teacher was pro-choice. I think that bit of info in the title fuels the controversy. Then again, controversy in journalism, who would have thought?

I'm so glad that they reversed their decision to disqualify her. I'm not sure why they would disqualify her anyway - because her topic was controversial, not politically correct?

I happen to agree with the young lady so maybe I am a bit biased....

This is not intended to be horribly inflamatory and I've really tried to word it in a neutral way.

Most pro-choice opinions are based on a persons religious beliefs.(this is obviously a generalization, but it is what I've seen)

And there is a strong tendency to categorize people who don't share the same religious beliefs that we ourselves have as "wrong" rather than simply accepting that it's OK not to have the same religious beliefs.

So, for many people, strong statements against abortion are percieved as "pushing" one's own religious beliefs, at the expense of other people's equally valid opinions. Something they try to discourage in public school where there are often children of many faiths.
