Default I must be sick! What could I be thinking?

Lately I have become obsessed with Vintage jewelry. Rhinestone brooch's to be exact. Now when I say obsessed I mean that i spend hours stalking it on Ebay, craigslist, yard sales and thrift stores.
I want to keep the best of the best for myself but I have hatched a plan to resell the rest. I am going to buy in big Lots , pick out what I want and resell the rest. The idea is to make enough back to cover the expense of what I keep.

I have a shop I can sell it in, I could remix it up into lots and auction it off on ebay and I could also go to the flea market.
But am I nuts to think it might work in this economy? Will people buy this stuff at the flea market?

The average brooch retails around 12.00. When I buy in lots I am getting them at about 2 to 3 dollars each.

I guess since I want to keep some for myself I have nothing to lose. It's just that I fear setting up all my jewels and nobody buying.

    Do it or don't?

As Constance posted, I'm not sure how much of a market there would be for jewelry with the economy the way it is now. Perhaps you can buy one small lot (I'm not sure how many are in a "lot".) and see how they sell before committing to buying a large amount and sinking your money into something you might not be able to unload.

Its a great market for buyer like you, because your wanting it. for sellers its few and foar between. I sell on ebay and last year i sold alot of vintage jewlery, did pretty good.

I think you'd do well. There is a good market for this, especially with people who turn them into new pieces of jewelry. I would also try etsy to sell your pieces, you could sell them as supplies. I'd love for you to offer some here, I'd be buying!

I think you should test the water before investing too much money. Maybe buy 1 or 2 lots & see how items sell. I got into the eBay thing last year & bought several lots (not jewelry) to resale. Once the items arrived it was hard for me to sell the nicer pieces (I want to keep too much). At this point I should make a little, but items haven't sold as fast or for as much as I thought they would.

I don't' mind selling them for a just a few dollars profit. Every penny earned is a penny more then what I had.

I think that you should start small as well...if I have to choose between buying a gallon of milk or a piece of jewelry, my choice is obvious...and I think more and more people are getting in to the same situation. I wish you the best with your endeavors!!

I feel the same way about certain vintage dolls but I know that I have to put a limit on it. Like another poster said, test the waters first. If it's a really small profit it's not worth the time and effort you are putting into it so maybe you should draw the line and stop stalking for a while. I know that is hard to do. I keep talking about ebaying a lot of my stuff but the truth is I won't make as much selling things now as I would have before the economy took a nosedive.

There will always be people out there who will spend their money on vintage jewellery. Start small at first and work your way up if it is doing well. Good luck!

enjoy your hobby. it's just a few bucks.
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.
