Default Wow....This is a first for me :(

On my way to work, I happen to look in the rear view mirror and see the red lights....oh man, I know I wasn't speeding, I was wearing my seat belt, so I couldn't figure out why I was being pulled over.

Anyway, I pull over get out my license and proof of insurance and then asks if I have my registration....ahhh...yeah, give me a moment, I find it in the glove compartment. He says..."I'll be right back"

Comes back and says, do you know you're driving w/expired tags? What, that can't be, I have proof that the car's plates were renewed last month. He say's "yeah, I called to verify and show that you did purchase the tags but they haven't been put on." I know they were put on, as they were stapled to the registration card, and paper they were on was still attached, but without the tags.

I'm totally baffled...the stickers can't just fall off the plates can they? Is it possible somebody stole them? Wow....I just can't believe it. Had to pay $10 to get duplicates.

People CAN and DO steal them. If a cop sees them they see them from a distance and aren't looking at the numbers, so if they're the right color and year...

As the economy gets worse and worse I'm afraid there will be more of this sort of stupid criminality. Last weekend, downtown there was a rash of someone siphoning out peole's gas tanks.

Sorry it happened to you though..that sucks. BTW, if you don't have one, go to your local auto parts store and get a locking gas cap.

When we had the tags that stuck to the license plate we took a razor blade and cut the sticker from the corners toward the middle but not all the way to the middle.

That way if someone tried to steal it they would get pieces and not the whole sticker.

Texas has since went to windshield sticker.

I have not heard of people stealing them (sheltered life I guess) I couldn't figure out how they could get them off the plate in one piece. Crazy, Crazy.

Fortunately the officer was very nice and didn't ticket me. Funny thing is, I'm not angry, maybe I'm still shocked that someone could do this, and think that it's ok.

Dh (bless his heart) kept saying, at least you didn't get a ticket, and fortunately it's a $10 fix...I guess you have to think positive.

Oh yes, people steal them. It is the way society is headed. We are going to have to have them locked under a protected covering soon.

Yep, they've been stolen here, too. A set was stolen off a work truck last year, it was so wrong.

I know here in Illinois, it is almost impossible for someone to steal the sticker and reuse it. I put on one crooked a few years ago, and it still sits crooked under the new ones, becuase it was impossible to get it off without tearing it.

Granted, that doesn't mean someone didn't take it! At least you had a nice officer pull you over, and since you had the actual registration card, he knew you were legit. And it stinks that you have to pay $10, but it's cheaper than a ticket would have been!

We had ours stolen at church!! Now this was in a large city downtown, so I doubt it was congregant, but who knows.

Forgot to add: dh now marks through the tag with a exacto knife or razor blade, so the tag is there, but if someone tries to steal it, they won't get it all.

This exact thing happened to me a month ago and I had to pay $20, again, to get another sticker. I was sooo mad.

My sticker was stolen back in 2001, so long ago, but not a recent or new development in terms of things that theifs target.

In fact I have quasi-family that steal the stickers all the time from other cars... they do not keep up on their registration, so just go out and steal a sticker.. grr... My quasi "Jerry Springer" family.. luckily only have to deal with them once a year for a few hours at X-mas..
