me + irs = insanity!
Ok, so last spring the IRS let us know that there was an error made in our taxes for 2006 and that we owed additional money. We checked and indeed they were correct. We entered into an agreement with them to pay $75 a month until the balance was paid. No problems until today.
Last week we got our federal refund less the amount we had owed from 2006. This led me to believe that we were even from our 2006 taxes. It would seem that way to you guys, right? Well...today they draft the $75 again. After a phone call, a clueless lady at the IRS 800 number tells DH that the draft was already in processing so they couldn't stop it, but it gets better. They now show that we still owe another $46. So, this $75 today had been applied so why didn't they just take the $121 from our refund in the first place. Well, she thinks it's an error that we we "caught" soon and we will be refunded the money. This raised a big
to me!

We had a similar experience, they claimed we owed for some 2005 taxes; our question was why didn't they take it out of the money we received in 2006 and 2007. Finally resolved, but oh brother.

Probably, because the interest and penalty was not figured yet when they took the balance from your tax return. The additional $121 is probably the interest & penalty...at least that would be my guess.

The amount that we were working with had the penalty assessed on it already and $46 would be way too much interest for the amount we owed...I think. It just aggravates me to no end the the best we could get from the operator was a "I guess" answer.

I hate the tax people to death.
Go back to 2007 and I've been in Canada since 2002. I had to file a return in 2005 in order for us to be able to get the house we're in now, so I filed from 2002 to 2005. Canada Revenue Agency had an issue with the 2002 return, trying to accuse me of working while I was in Canada all of 2001...when I wasn't even a resident!
Long story short: they tried to close my bank account and hijack all of my money. They also tried to tell me I owed them for any taxes incurred because of 2001's income when I lived in the US. A year and a half later, someone finally got the message and the whole situation was resolved.
I refuse to deal with any tax people ever again.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

Dealing with the IRS is never fun. I've never had to deal with the feds (knock on wood), but I've dealt with the state here in IL. We had some sales tax issues when we had our business, as in, they raised the sales tax rate and never notified a bunch of us (I wasn't the only one who didn't know), so for about 6 months, I was charging and paying the wrong rate. Which of course, they came after me for later (rather than take notice and notify me right away). So I had to pay the back sales taxes owed. So, they told me what I owed and we paid it...then, another 4 months later, we got the noticing stating all the penalties and interest owed. And it was surprisingly high...So I wouldn't be shocked if the $46 is penalties!
I hope it gets resolved for you soon!

I get the feeling that the stimulus package has the IRS all in a frenzy to squeeze every last penny out of the taxpayer that they can.
Early in February I received notice (certified mail, no less) that my mother owed over $2700 in unpaid taxes for year ending 12/31/04.
My mom died in February of 2004, and her estate was probated by a lawyer, which means the law office calculated the tax liability for that year and paid it before the estate was settled.
Naturally, I went directly from my mailbox to my lawyer's office, and she's busy writing a letter informing them of their error. Unfortunately, with the IRS, once they get the bit in their teeth they seem to lose all reason. I'm sure (from past experience) that we'll be revisiting this every February for at least 3 or 4 years, because they never update the account when you've paid, only when you haven't.
Actually, I think they were hoping I wouldn't question it and would just cough it up.

One year the IRS tried to tell us we sent in our return late ~ we didn't and I had sent it certified, return receipt requested so I had the proof. It took FOREVER to get this straightened out ~ at least 5 to 6 months.
