I am frightened, do you know anything about childhood diabetes?
Please reasure me, please.
My 11 year old daughter has started to be thirsty all the time and urinating every half hour or so.
We've been to the doctor to day and yes he mentioned the possibility of diabetes. She is off for a battery of tests in the morning. Please pray for us please.
It can be something else, can't it?
Oh please.

It can be other things --- a urinary tract infection. . . as well as some other lesser common things.
I'd not worry, until the preliminary tests are back. . . did they at least do a finger stick glucose to give you an idea?

(((Hugs))) It's always scary while we wait for tests to be done. I would think that if he thought it was diabetes he would have sent her to have the testing done stat. So maybe the fact that the doctor was willing to wait means he doesn't really think it is.

Oh, I hope you are right! No, he didn't do any tests, but it was only a walk in Clinic not my family doctor. She is away!
But I hope you are right, that it could be something else more benign... I feel so sick to the stomach about the whole thing. Its been such a difficult week....

blood tests freak me out too. Your daughter needs to know that if it is something like diabetes....maybe....there's nothing you cant do together..because you're the team. hang in there honey...let me know how it goes. I'm praying...you're praying, FV family is praying...now find you a tyelenol and try to get some sleep. don't forget your list. Write any list....next years Christmas list.....anything...don't let your head take you down that crazy road....
Breathe in....breathe out...breathe in....knew you could

Okay, take a deep breath. If it is diabetes, you should know that it can be managed, and the earlier it is diagnosed, the better. You can handle it. I'll be holding your family in my thoughts.

Actually- didn't another FVer just went through the same thing with her little boy a couple months ago? I don't want to invade their privacy by announcing their business but I believe he had the exact same symptoms and as it turned out-- he was fine.
Diabetes is manageable but hopefully she's just fine. Good luck!

Thank-you everyone for your support and prayers.... I am still praying it is something far less serious... something like a bladder infection would be "nice"....
Just came back from the blood test. My poor Dd was brave and then afterwards passed out and then threw up! Oh my gosh I almost fainted for her. Blood tests aren't my favourite thing either but I manage...but watching her was just beyond my ability to cope. I think we are both so overly stressed by all of this.
Then I find out my family doctor is on Vacation until March 30th!!!!!!!! So I had to track down her info and make sure the results are sent to the walk in Clinic where we went to originally.
I should hear the results if they are serious some time today.... so I won't be far from the phone all day...
I feel so useless... I can't manage anything.... even laundry is taxing my abilities my mind is in such a fog.

That was my first thought. But even if it is diabetes it is not a death sentence. My daughter has been prediabetic for about 4 years and the changes she made in her lifestyle have not been major. Between the medicines and the therepies these days even if she is diabetic she will be OK! Prayers going out to you!

My daughter was diagonosed with Type I diabetes at age 10. She had the symptoms you mentioned, but also had a huge appetite, really abnormally huge. She had lost a lot of weight, and she also would fall asleep anywhere. So your daughter may not have diabetes if you haven't noticed all these symptoms.
I agree with previous posters, that diabetes is not a death sentence. They have much better ways to manage it now than when my daughter was a child. The insulin pump is a huge improvement over insulin injections. My daughter is now in her thirties, has been diabetic for over 25 years, and she is living a normal life.Last edited by RaineyDaye; 03-16-2009 at 01:54 PM.
