If you dry them you can add them to cloves for a really amazing holiday potpourri.

And you can rub the shiny orange side on woodwork. Makes it shiny!

I put them in my garbage disposal. You could probably add the dried peels to one of those recipes for potpurri that are simmered on the stovetop or in a slow cooker to scent the house.

I have heard you can use the peel to whiten your teeth. Just take the peel and rub against teeth.

I used to give a bit of one to my cockatiel. She loved the white part, and would nibble on it.

Ok. Not an all purpose tip, but it was the only other thing I could think of.

Thin strips in a cup of tea add a good flavor. Thrown in a pot with water, cloves and cinnamon sticks makes a great boil to improve house smell. Mulch into garden.

You can add them to a container of coffee beans. This makes really good coffee with an orange flavor.

I let them dry on top of the woodstove it smells nice while they are drying and once they are dry I add them to tea (tastes kind of like Constant Comment). I also like to eat the peel before I eat the orange (but I only eat it if was grown by someone I know or if it was organic).

Ya know I've got a sour orange tree in my yard, so the fruit is a no-go. But I love the ideas here for using the peels. I did wonder if it would make any difference in the taste for zest though.

And I might as well ask...does anyone know how to un-sour the tree or fruit? Seems like such a waste!

    Thanks!

Bitter oranges were typically used in orange marmalade.

You could also slice and dehydrate the oranges to sell to crafters for holiday decorations. I love the look of dried orange slices strung on garland of bay or magnolia leaves and cranberries.

i thought maybe it could be used for cleaning purposes some how but on second thought-the sugars would make little critters come by ughhh attracted to it probably.
