    Default Kind of sad tonight...

I just got a phone call from a good friend of ours. Her husband used to be a patient of mine. He has had a rare form of muscular dystrophy for several years. She has cared for him at home and his health has degenerated gradually. Recently, he had to go into the hospital. He passed away this afternoon.

I believe he is in a better place and I know he is no longer suffering, but we're going to miss him and I feel sad for his wife. She told me that she didn't know if she could go on without him. She's 69 years old, has no immediate family to help her and, financially, they have been devastated by his illness and her recent bout with lung cancer. We're going to lend her the money to take care of his cremation and, though it's coming out of our EF, I'm glad we can help her when she needs it. Please keep our friend in your thoughts. Not only is she having to deal with his death, but she's also worried about whether she'll be able to keep their house and what her future holds.

I'm so sorry for your loss Michelle. I think you are a wonderful friend for helping her through the cremation, and of course for just being there. With no family around, I bet she's going to need your friendship to get through what's ahead too. It's so, so sad what happens to our elderly. I'm very sure she's happy to know you, and also very sure you're glad to be there for her! Hope things will work out somehow.

Thanks for all your kind words. She is a wonderful person and much stronger than she knows. She cared for her husband all through her own illness. I'm hoping we can help her find a senior apartment complex which is based on income, I know of one just a few miles from where we live. Her husband was a funny, sweet man who had a wonderful sense of humor. I'll really miss all the funny emails he used to send us.
