I'm glad your son was not severely injured and that nobody else was either. Maybe a trip to a rehabilitation hospital for those that suffer traumatic brain injuries would work to help your son realize how forturnate he and his friends are.

My son was in an auto accident at the age of 17 and suffered severe injuries (coma, severe traumatic brain injury, paralysis, broken shoulder and more) and alcohol nor speed were factors. My son will be 26 next month and he still requires supervision and he still has to live with us.

I understand how you feel. My DS#1 (also 16) was in a diving accident last month. The "It can't happen to me" attitude REALLY gets to me.

I am so glad they weren't hurt. Now you just want to beat them because they did something soooooooooo stupid!

I know he was scared enough at the time, really shook up.
Its his attitude of OH well It was only one beer, ughhh and hes still lieing about the driver to other people he retells the story too.
I asked him yesterday" So u think this was ajoke? That ur wernt extremly lucky- what are u looking for danger?"
he says" No mom i was scared- im not stupid- I know how lucky I am- Stop making it a issue- whats the big deal , so what I had one beer- the driver only had 2-3beer way earlier thats not drunk mom" ughhhhhhh
Ill wait till his sorness goes away and leave it for awhile then shock the heck out of him with major graphic scenes-real life . I guess thats all I can do- kids watch too much tv and dont realize the reality.

I don't see that anyone, no matter what age, can go through that experience and not have a "come to Jesus" moment. It does not have to even be faith based. There is no escaping that all involved have had to come to terms with their own mortality. This experience will stay with all of them for the rest of their lives as it will for those who love them.

Thankfully no one was hurt too badly

Kids that age certainly think they are invincible. His attitude is pretty typical too--but he's only 16 and is drinking illegally. That alone is enough to get him in trouble with the law. Scaring him further sounds like a good idea to me. Normally I wouldn't take that position, but he was doing something that could hurt innocent people and doesn't seem to understand how lucky he was, regardless of what he says.
