    Default UNICEF donations

Has anyone here ever made a direct donation or know someone who has made a direct donation to Unicef? I know some charities are better than others at using the money you donate for "the cause". I know very little about Unicef so any personal knowledge would be helpful.

I really don't know anything good or bad about Unicef, except that it's been around forever. That might say something good about it. And I don't blame you for being leary about where your money is going. There's so many horror stories about these things.

Personally, DH and I donate locally because of wanting to know too. So it's the food banks and our local Habitat for Humanity store. Both seem to keep things "in order".

    HTHs a little.

Thanks for the reply. I did a little Google work this morning and actually found the specific information I needed. I've seen ads on TV for Pampers and Unicef who are doing a joint campaign for tetanus vaccines. I think it's called 1 pack=1 vaccine. I don't buy Pampers. I will not buy Pampers. I'm about to start using cloth diapers to save money and resources. I wanted to see how much each of the vaccines actually cost and then donate directly to Unicef. It's a worthwhile cause. Proctor and Gamble only gives Unicef $.05 (yes, FIVE cents) for every specially marked package sold during the promotion period, which was April 7 to August 31 in 2008. I don't know what the promotion period is this year. I figure I can do good on multiple fronts this way helping people and earth at the same time. It's amazing that a nickel can save a life.

In Canada registered charities are audited every year and the CRA posts a full listing on their website along with links to their financial information so you can see exactly what percentage of their income is directed to actual work, advertising, salaries, etc. I don't know if the IRS does something similar, but if not, any reputable charity should have their financials posted on their website. It's nice to have a central listing though as you may find charities you've never actually heard of (and wouldn't think to look up) who are doing a much better job than the one you were originally planning to give to.
