Just got back from weekly grocery shopping and was totally floored by the prices. I stopped first at the salvage grocery and found the the prices had risen so much that I could get a lot of the same items at grocery store prices. It was very slim pickings, but I did manage to pick up a few items. I then went to the regular grocery store and found that they too had a serious spike in prices. My $ did not go too far this week

Anyone else noticing a a significant rise in food prices?

I'll tell you the truth Polly, around here the prices have dropped alot. Milk is steady at $2.99, down from $4.49. Dozen lrg eggs are $1.19, down from $1.99, and butter is at $2.00 lb. Meats, especially chicken has been very low priced, as well as pork too. Bread is still high, but I load up my freezer when the nicer stuff goes on sale.

I'm not sure if it's maybe because the 3 supermkts we have here are at price wars, or all 3 are competing against WalMart. But the prices have WalMart beat, at least with sale items. I really hate WalMart's meat anyway. Wouldn't buy it even if it was cheaper.

But whatever they're doing is fine with me, 'cause now it's much better than 6 months ago. So for now at least, I'm a happy shopper

Hope it's contagious, and you see saner prices soon too!

Bread at the dollar store is up to $2.75, milk is holding steady at $4 at the dollar store and $4.99 at the grocery store...everything keeps going up, while my unemployment check is going to be coming to a halt and the job prospects are looking, well, dead.

I know I am not the only one in this boat, so HOW COME they KEEP raising prices? Ugh.....

I keep a Price Book and it shows more ups than downs, but there ARE many prices that have gone down - substantially.

--Butter at Aldi was as high as $2.19/pound in September '08 and it's been $1.49 recently, down from $1.98.

--Egg prices generally go down around Easter. I use powdered whole eggs when the price per egg is less than fresh eggs, but that's usually in the winter.

--Milk has also gone down a LOT! From a high of $3.98 to $2.50, but it goes up and down like a roller coaster around here. The whey-based milk substitute I use is still less than a gallon of milk and I use it instead of milk from the store, and have for 28-years.

--Sugar at Aldi has gone up from $1.90/5# (Nov. 2008) to $2.53.

This is another reason to have a stockpile.... I can wait to replace foods when they are loss leaders because I have 6-12-months worth of them in storage. I can wait for the best price point to make a purchase. You can help beat rising food prices by purchasing ingredients, rather than ready-to-use items or highly processed foods. The more hands it's taken to prepare your food before you purchase it, the more expensive it's going to be. Our diet is based on whole foods, which also tend to be less expensive, more filling, and better for you than highly-processed foods.

I haven't altered my weekly food budget ($50/week for 2 adults) in many years, and don't see doing so this year either.

I noticed some ups and downs here in Ohio too. At Giant Eagle my favorite Yoplait yogurt would go on sale for 20 for $10, then I would coupon it. Now the best "sale" proce there is 20 for $15.
Aldi has dropped some prices on butter and milk. Gas here is hovering at +/- $2.00/gall

The grocery stores in my area have been having good deals on pantry basics the past couple of months. I haven't paid more than $2.99 for a gallon of milk, and I have been getting 2 1/2 dozen eggs for $2.97. Yesterday I got crest toothpaste for 49 cents a tube, bought 10 of them, and I got manwich for 49 cents a can, bought 10 of those as well.

I have no idea what is going on with food prices! Some are up, some are down. I just got milk for $1.99 a gallon, and that was a great price. Potatoes have come down a bit to $2.99 for a 10 lb. bag, and eggs are $1.00 a dozen. Some things are still outrageous, but I am finding a few more deals lately so that is encouraging.

We just came up north to our summer cabin, and I went to the little local co-op grocery. The prices were way higher than I remember them, on everything! It's gonna be an expensive summer, I'm thinking. They are putting in a super-WM an hour from here. It will be ready in the fall, but still...I'm not fond of WM's meat. The local co-op has 4H meat that is sooooo good.

Prices are down significantly at my local King Soopers (Krogers). I paid $1.99 for milk yesterday, and there were mark-downs all over the store on the basics.

Price here are up...and the loss leaders aren't all that good a lot of weeks. We maybe have one good ad, out of 4 major stores. A dozen eggs have been around $2.39. The farmers markets are opening, though and that will help a little. We have a range for gas from $2.15 (a mile away) to $2.39 by my house.

This is me too. I noticed the last time I went that they were actually down quite a bit, so we'll see how it goes on Sunday.
