As horrible as this all is, I sure hope it changes America forever. Wouldn't it be really wierd if the FV mentality became absolutely normal?

Wow!!! I felt sorry for them, but I too hope they will make the frugal lifestyle change for good. I hope their friends can support them & understand. I have friends who say they are frugal and then go out and spend money on the craziest non essentials.

What an interesting article... And it looks like there are a few more articles there that are frugal-related... Thanks for posting this!

I hope our economy turns around soon... I'm afraid that we (as a country) are so far in the hole, it's going to take quite a while... Scary...

you know, i'm seeing/hearing a lot about this type of thing around where i live too. my personal opinion aside (re: the articles)- it's neat to see others doing something "new" that i've done for so many yrs.
no longer am i "weird" because i use vinegar & water to wash down my counters... I'm the "tipper" - people ask little ol' me about mundane things (to me!).

i shop for groceries where i can get the best deals that week & i can use the coupons i have for those items.
groceries at a "boutique" LOL yeah, that's once a year to send a special gift to someone (bday gift of petit fours or something like that). Not weekly!

Kudos to ppl w/money to burn to do as they please... for me, I'm a saver and apparently a "tipper" too! LOL

but I am seeing a LOT more of a "trend" happening...
as happens with all trends (green, frugal), it'll come... and go just as fast.
But I'm not leaving when it does.

I'm seeing more and more of these type of articles. Seems to be the popular trend these days. Let's just hope people are actually learning from these experiences.

I feel so bad for those people, I was unemployed 2x in the last few years and that's when we learned the majority of our frugal skills. I can relate to the woman in the article when she said people just don't get how tight their money situation is. Unless people have had to live through job loss and very little income, they don't seem to understand that even an "inexpensive" restaurant is a luxury.

Even though we are both currently employed I still apply the frugal skills I learned while unemployed. I find them empowering and I take pleasure in saving money.

...i almost felt sorry for them at first when i read about their life as it is right now...but then i stopped myself and said..."hey-that's already my life...and i don't feel sorry for me".... i don't really feel deprived in the least bit...maybe because for me it's a 'choice'...i don't know....

they have told us about all the things they can't buy...all the places they can't go...all the things they can't do.... but what about all the things they can.... there are plenty of things still left out in the world that you don't 'need' money to enjoy.... they need to rethink and reshift their focus...they are so 'hung' up on the 'money makes the world go round and you need money to buy happiness' that they can't see beyond it.... sure...you do need some money....you unfortunately can't get around that....but there is so much more out there if they spent a little less time thinking about what they have 'lost' and went out and 'found' something new...they might even end up a little happier in the end... just my 2 cents worth...for whatever it is worth....

but read the whole article and it was a great read...thanks for posting....
it helps keep me focused and appreciating my lifestyle choice even more...

just one more thought.... if everyone 'gets' frugality...its gonna be all the harder for us to get the 'good deals'.....lol....

We have a lot of unemployment in our county. At dollar stores now, I am seeing people I have never seen before in these stores. And some are buying large amounts when they see a bargain.
Today garage saling, it was a zoo. Again people I have not seen before.
It was a nice day, early spring fever, and lots of people out there.
I got some bargains so I was a happy camper

lol Anyone remember my battle with Mary Hunt over her thoughts on Freegans? Even those who understand us don't always understand. Sad to say, everyone has their own perception of what frugal is and is not. People think they're being "frugal" by buying brand name products with a coupon that saves them $0.10. To them, that's frugal. To us, that's just, well, saving $0.10. I'm not even as close to as frugal now as I was a few years ago. My co-worker says this recession is going to be around for 30+ years, and I tend to agree with him, and no amount of money is going to buy us out of it.

The idea is to work hard, think slowly, and live within your means. If you stick to those three things, chances are, you'll do just fine. Do you really need the brand name pasta sauce? Do you really need to have two cars? Do you really need a brand new pair of sneakers just because the old ones have lost their newness? Or is the store brand pasta sauce just as good? Or does one car sit in the garage most of the week? Or do your shoes still fit and you've not worn them out?

Frugality is really not that hard. But our world is so insanely rush-rush-rush we forget the simplicity of slowing down and just using our heads.

    I  frugality.
