Default One goal down, two to go

We had 3 goals for the year. Replace our roof (ourselves), take a beach vacation (family reunion with my family) and save a big chunk of money for a new van. Well, the roof is done.

My brother and parents flew in last Wednesday and spent 5 days with my dh replacing our roof. It went fairly smoothly for such a big project. I spent most of the time cooking, cleaning, picking up the yard, and mostly running errands for the men. I went to Lowes or Home Depot at least 7 times in those few days.

We did have to replace the plywood in several places and a large beam was rotted, so we had to fix that too. But it is done. We saved the money ahead of time (something that we would have never been able to do a few years ago - definitely a change in our mindset), but we did go over budget. I don't think there was anything we could have done differently to stay in our budget. We shopped around for the cheapest prices, but it just ended up taking more materials than we had estimated. I don't have the final figures yet, but I think it ended up costing around $4000 - $2500 lower than our lowest estimate to have someone else do it. so in the end it was worth it, although all the men would tell you they will never do that again LOL. It was very hard.

Check out my blog for pictures of how it went. Now moving on to the next goal on our list.

Good for you! The relief to be able to check such a large project off your list has to feel great. You won't have to worry about it again for 25-30 years!

That new roof is nice, and I'm sure the guys worked hard, but I love the pic of the girls. Kids, nothing bothers them. Can't wait until you post announcing the second goal is reached.

Good job.Don't feel bad I learned along time ago almost everything like that costs more than you planned. You always find something else that needs replaced that is hidden from view.

    Well done! it looks great.

We always end up slightly over budget on our major projects too. There's just always some expensive thing no one accounted for. I think if we ever came in exactly on budget I'd spend the rest of my life trying to figure out what we left out or did wrong.

Your goals are hauntingly similar to mine...only we did our roof last year. It was a HUGE cost savings for us...I'm very thankful I have a dh that is hands on~LOL~!

We're getting ready for our beach vacation...it starts June 19th. YEA!!
The cash is saved for that.

Next on the agenda is a new truck for dh. His is in the 80's...and has over 150,000 miles on it~

It looks TERRIFIC! There's a show on HGTV that I love to watch called "Renovation Realities". Looks like your renovation reality went smoother than the ones on that show. Thanks for sharing your progress in pictures and I, too, loved the pic of the girls. WTG!
