Default I May As Well Flushed $25 Down the Toilet!

I am so angry with myself right now. I bought a beautiful new shirt for myself the other day and wore it a couple times. I was very excited to wear it to my in-laws house this coming weekend. I've lost 25 lbs in the past 4 months, and IMO it looked really good on me. I haven't bought a nice shirt like this in years. Today I washed it and when I pulled it out of the washing machine I noticed it was smaller. I SHRUNK IT!!!!! Ahhhhhhh!

What a stupid waste of money. The moral of the story is to check how to clean a piece of clothing before purchasing it--I was supposed to hand wash it! I never would have bought it had I known. The only thing going around in my head right now is...What a waste of money.

Argh! That is so frustrating! And you know, even if you read the labels and wash like they say it can still shrink. I bought a lovely warm soft pullover shirt a few years back, I saved up to buy it and when I washed it the first time it shrunk, too. Now it has 3/4 sleeves instead of long. I was so irritated, I know exactly how you feel.

Oh no. Why do these things always happen to things we really like? Sorry.

    Post Remedy

Wait, don't panic. I've heard of a way to fix the shrunken clothing; some expert posted it in a newspaper column.
Dampen the clothing. Then pour liquid fabric softener on it, and leave it a few minutes. Then begin to stretch the garment gently, and it should "give", and you can stretch it out to shape. Then rinse garment a few times in warm water, squeeze out water by hand and roll up in towel; then lay flat or hang to dry.
Tell me how it works out. I've wanted to try this method on my knitted berets and a few other things (a wool cashmere sweater), but haven't got around to it yet.

    Definitely worth a try QM

How disappointing for you - after all your hard work to have this happen. I'm glad you came here to vent. Please don't be so hard on yourself - even brilliant people are allowed slip ups now and then!!

I've tried the rewetting trick and it does work -- on some fabrics. When dry a cool iron and some more gentle stretching helps.

Sorry that happened! I can so relate. I had purchased a 2-piece outfit and did the same thing. It happened to be something I liked so much and was going to wear it often. I even received compliments on it, and for me, that's RARE! It came from a thrift store and could not be replaced.

Yep, I've heard that too. Depending on the fabrics, sometimes you can stretch them back out!

I was laughing when I saw your post title. One of my good friends literally flushed a couple hundred bucks down the toilet the other day. I was laughing so hard, I didn't ask specifics, but somehow, she dropped her cell phone in the toilet, and didn't realize it until she was flushing...and she actually flushed it!

What kind of fabric is it? The stretching may work...I have done it successfully many times.

If it buttons up.. when you do the stretching put saftey pins in between the buttons so that you don't stretch or tear the buttonholes. Otherwise unbutton it, but be careful because that can leave you stretching one side more than the other and then the fit is awful.

    Good luck!

I'll try 'the trick'!...Thanks. Maybe there is hope. Now I've got to go check and see if we have liquid fabric softener. I don't think we do. If not, I guess I'll buy some next time we're in a store. Wouldn't hurt to have some on hand anyways.

Hurray...I found some! BTW, the fabric is 100% rayon. I'll let you know how it works.
