Why can't people just do the right thing?

I had a horrible day at work today. EVERYONE just seemed to do whatever they pleased. I had probably 20 carloads of people just drive right into our campground. There is a huge sign that tells them to stop and to NOT come into the campground unless they are a registered camper or guest of a camper. There is another sign as you enter each of the campground roads saying the same thing. As you pull in I stand up and open the window of my office. They just look at me and drive on by! UGH! Then I have to walk out back and watch them to see where they are and what they are doing.

One woman drove past THREE signs telling her NOT to be in the campground to park at the bath house and then walk across a bridge to the playground with her kids. Let me explain that the playground is along the MAIN park road. You just pull through a gravel loop and walk two steps and there is the playground. Yet she chose to drive into the campground, all the way through the non-electric campsites past the three signs. Then she parked at the bath house and walked across the road, across a bridge into the playground. When I drove down to see what she was doing and politely explained that she wasn't allowed to be in the campground unless she was camping and asked her to move her car I got told off. "My kids are playing on the playground and I will move my car when I'm ready. When they are done playing and we are ready to go, my car will move". I have to tell you , I saw red. I am normally laid back and even tempered but it was all I could do to not knock her teeth out! She lives right up the road from the park and has no excuse. She KNOWS she can just pull off the road and park in the parking area and the playground is there.

The boss has hired himself a pool manager to "make his job easier". I swear if his job gets any easier he will lapse into a coma! The pool was really the only thing he did at the park. He does all his paperwork at home in the A/C. He goes on and on and on about how wonderful this girl is. Yes she's wonderful when he's at the pool watching her! But once he leaves she's just like the lifeguards. This year four of our six lifeguards are brand new to the job. They just passed their certification a couple of weeks ago! The pool opened last weekend and that entire weekend the pool manager popped her head out of the concession stand ONCE to see what a lifeguard was doing while on the stand. ONE time! They were goofing off, had people standing all around them while they were on the stand, etc. Yesterday she called in sick to go play in a softball game! Today she not only watched a lifeguard dive off the high stand but ENCOURAGED her to do it(that's a no no). Last Monday she spent most of the day in the campground riding around on the gator with the guy who works with me. Today she was telling me how she has him fooled and she will do as she pleases down there. UGH!

The boss has more attitude than usual. Everyone is commenting on it this year. Even the campers are complaining about how rude he is to them, etc. He's been really hard on the girl who works with me for no reason, leaving her in tears more than once. And of course, I get to hear all the complaining from everyone. And I don't know what to do. I get tired of hearing the complaining but at the same time I realize that they have to tell someone. I could encourage them to write to the higher ups but people have been complaining to them for years about him and they never do anything. They send him an email telling him who complained, send him a copy of your letter or email and then ask him about it. Whatever he tells them, they believe. They never investigate anything. So other than listening and apologizing for him my hands are tied.

It's going to be a long summer. Everyone seems to have a very short temper and the attitude that they will do as they please and the hell with the rules. Yippee for me! I need a nice, sunny day off! I need to find some way to just detatch myself from people and not care what they do I guess. Wanna drive into the campground, go ahead what do I care? HOW do I do that? Why can't people just do the right thing and be polite to each other?

I'm sorry you had such a rough time today. It's hard when you're given a job to do and not the tools to do it with. Are you able to report people who just drive on in without a visitors pass to the police to be charged with trespassing?

Hmmmmm campground.. is it conected with a park or privately owned.

If its privately owned and people are parking where they shouldn't they should be able to be towed at thier expense, usually that modivates them quickly to follow the rules if you tell them that. Money seems to be the one thing people pay attention to anymore, not whats right.

Your boss sounds like he needs to start opening his eyes, lifeguards goofing off, employees "playing" on the clock, making employees unhappy, unhappy customers... he is loosing money left and right and thats gonna come back to haunt him, expeciallt if someone gets hurt at the pool and sues cause of lifeguard neglagence.

There are no visitors passes where I work. It's a very small, under-budgeted park. But there is a HUGE sign that says STOP! Registered campers and their guests ONLY beyond this point right as you pull into the campground area and my office is right there! And people who live in the area seem to feel that they own the place. Then they want to complain about all the OTHER people who don't follow the rules!

Unfortunately there are more and more people out there these days who have that selfish "me first" and I'll do what ever the heck I feel like attitude. They have that notion of "Rules for Thee but not for Me".
I often wonder exactly how their parents raised them when I see these type in action and sometimes I come to find that the apple didn't fall far from the tree at all, which leads me to wonder how did their parents raise them??

If your campground is privately owned I'd call the cops and have them ticket/tow them. You'd be surprised how fast their "attitude" changes then...

As far as the "pool manager" and her fakeness goes she will screw herself over eventually. Mind your own job and ignore what she's doing. She will eventually hang herself when it comes to your boss and her overinflated notions of her 'being able to do whatever she pleases'. Those type usually do.

I'd ask your boss what is the next step to be taken after someone refuses to leave. If he says call the police, I'd do so. If he says nothing, I wouldn't even bother to confront them.

I used to work in a library by myself sometimes. What could sound safer and more laid back? You'd be surprised. When a crowd of unruly teenagers was in there once misbehaving, they knew there wasn't a whole lot I could do about it and that I was intimidated. I just don't like dealing with the public nowadays.

You have more patience than me. I think I would have lost my job. I think I would have gone off on the woman and my boss. Hope things get better. Can you put some sort of barrier across the entrance so people coming in have no choice but to stop?

This is a state park so the cops don't have much authority there I don't think. Our super is actually our law enforcement and that's just a joke. His nickname among the employees is Barney Fife. I told him about the woman yesterday and he just rolled his eyes and said "yeah I know them. They are that way." So I told him that I am done trying to make people follow the rules. From now on they can drive into the campground and do what they want as far as I'm concerned.

As for the pool manager, well, when she doesn't do her job or make the lifeguards do theirs, it's left to myself or the other girl who works with me to do it. If they don't clean the bathrooms before they leave, we have to go and do it, etc. Yesterday I had to take out their trash, clean the bathrooms, etc. because they didn't do it before they closed up Sunday. Complaining to the boss does NO good because if you wear a bathing suit to work you are wonderful to him! They never get in trouble for ANYTHING down there!

I need to develp the attitude that it just doesn't matter and let people do what they want. If he wants rules followed he can show up for work more than 3 hours a week and enforce them! The problem with that is that I am there alone so much and at night. I have to go into these areas to clean bath houses and I like to know someone isn't in there messing around or waiting on me.

There is no barrier this time of year because we'd have to run out and move it every time someone wanted to camp and we can't do that. And as much as I would have loved to stomp the snot out of her, my kids were with me and I have to behave LOL. I also REALLY need this job right now so I have to be patient. Trust me, I was fuming and came home and had a good cry!

Ok, I say stop cleaning the bathrooms. It's their job right? Let them do it. See what happens. As long as you keep doing their job they are going to let you.She is getting paid to do it. Personally I'd tell her to her face I wasn't going to do it anymore, like it or not!!!! She's not out there doing yours is she? I didn't think so.I'm pissed for you and if my IE was working right I'd put up a fuming smile.
