    Default The News This Morning

said that Walmart is projecting 22,000 new job openings across the USA in 2009.

I'm wondering if this is the beginning of the economic upswing?

That averages out to about 6.5 jobs per Walmart. Yay.

Thing is, they're notorious for being cheap. They can afford to hire that many people because they don't pay them much and offer little to no benefits. But, I'm willing to look for the silver lining.

My husbands been under employeed going on the 20th month.

I prefer to view my world as the glass half full, so i'll take that silver lining. I think it's better then Walmart projects 22,000 layoffs in 2009.

It's better than laying off 22,000 people

I have been lurking here for a while and the WM bashing is so rampant, it is almost silly. This really angers me when I read things like this. Both my husband and my two grown children work for WM. My husband was hired as a military retiree a few years ago full time with benefits and within a year without a college degree was taken into their management training program in Logistics. He makes a very good salary with benefits and quite good profit sharing and bonuses without a degree. My kids work in stores and were hired on fulltime with benefits and make more money than they did with their previous jobs. My daughter has been with them for 6 years my son 4. They have been very good with my son who is Army Guard and has been in and out for several years accommadating his service. If you are willing to work hard, they will give you a fair shake. They are unlike many companies now...profitable and not asking for bailout money. That says it all.

I think it definately means something. I've noticed around here at least that things seem to be starting to look up. DH's company had 3 projected layoffs in April, but they never came and now aren't going too, since things are looking up.

I know a few other people too who have either gone back to their old jobs in which they were laid off or were finally able to find new jobs. I took a glance at the want ad's the other day, just to see what was there. For most of the winter, there were only a small handful of ads...when I looked the other day, there were 3 columns. So, not as many as there used to be, but it's definately looking better.

I think at least certain industries are starting too look up!

It means more people are trying to save money by shopping at WalMart so their numbers are up a bit, personally I look at how many people I know that are unemployed, purchased a house or a car this recently, or made some other major financial investment.

I'll admitt that the economy is still fragile, but I think we are seeing the beginning of recovery. While we are still losing jobs the rate is slowing, this is the first time that can be said (as far to my knowledge) I'm seeing growth in my own back yard, okay it's not stellar growth, but it's growth none the less. Heck, I can't believe how many of my son's friends are going on vacation this Summer. But then I did read that tourisum is up in the USA and we can expect an influx of not only domestic but foreign tourist. If people are feeling secure enough in their jobs to travel, well that's a good thing. Certain states are reported as doing rather well despite job losses in certain sectors, due to having natural resources that are selling/exporting. My own family is one who is affected by certain sector job losses. My husband now brings home less than a 10th of what he used to make in a year. I think his job sector has a long way for rebound, but I believe it will rebound, however I think he must change his career direction a smidge so he can start our ecomonic recovery. Which means education in same field, different direction. We are so far under the poverty line right now his schooling should be paid for, so that's a silver lining. So is the fact that up until now this part of his field (that he would go to school for) was not doing well because of the economy until now. Another indication that there's some growth, small though it may be.

What I'm not expecting is for everyone to get up tomorrow and for everybody to get their jobs back. What I am expecting is to see small spuruts of growth until our economy picks up speed again. This mess did not happen over night so I expect recovery won't either. I think it's good for my soul to focus on the positive, and there is positive out there. I had to make myself go out and look for for it. I drove around for a week searching it out and I found it, but the best part is now that my eyes are focused on finding the positive growth, the more I find. Amazing how a change in my attitude opened my eyes to see the positive around me and not the negative. I have to believe that when we look back 2,3,4 years from now they will say that right now was the beginning, small, tiny, seemingly insignificant as these changes are, for if I don't believe that.....what hope for economic recovery do I have???
