Summer vacation's upon us: What are your plans?
My DS10 and DS5 are little busy bodies this year! I can't keep up.

Tomorrow is DS5's last day of Kindergarten and Friday is DS10's last day of 5th grade. I'm wracking my brain all summer trying to figure out what to do with the kids. I decided that on the days that DH was able to be home (he works six days a week now), we'd take the kids to the local pool for the day. When he is at work, there's a wading pool near the house that I'm planning on almost living at. DS5's also loving the fact he can ride his bike, plus he likes being outside and drawing things with the chalk. He has about 6 weeks of summer vacation, while DS10 doesn't go back until September.
So what does everyone have planned?Last edited by MomToTwoBoys; 06-24-2009 at 09:51 PM.

No plans here. staying on the home front this summer.

No real vacation type plans, just the usual. Church outdoor movie nights, free movies at local theater, fireworks, visiting the great grandparents, grilling on the grill, ect.
I've got some home improvement/decorating things in the works. Some decluttering projecys I'd like to get to, that's about it.~~~

Staying home mostly, to recover the EF and save for new windows for the house. In August we will take a 5 day trip to a hobby show with friends. That's already mostly paid for (hotel and tickets).
It's funny, DH was really cool with the "staying home and saving for the EF" part. He was pretty anxious those months he was out of work and thinks it is a really good idea to have at least 6 months worth of expenses saved up.Use it up, Wear it out,

No vacation this year. no money. seems dumb IMO, to waste money on a vacation when theres bills to pay. you don't need to spend money going somewhere else. you can stay in the home area and use the local parks and summer programs and keep the local economy going. just my .02

We take our big vacation every year in December when we spend 7-10 days in Disney World.
For the summer we take a small weekend trip or two. This summer we are going to the Ft. Walton/Destin area to go deep sea fishing. We also are thinking about a two or three day get-a-way to Gatlinburg and/or a two day trip to Six Flags and White Water.
As far as the day by day events for the summer, we are pretty busy.
*DD volunteers two days a week at the museum.
*She also has a job working for a minor league baaseball team. When they are playing at home she works a couple of nights a week.
*She has volleyball practice & games two afternoons a week.
*DS cuts seven yards every other Saturday and an additional yard on the other weekends.
*DS plays basketball with a 3 on 3 league one afternoon a week.
*Both kids go to the gym, to do their cardio workout, lift weights and play basketball around four or five days a week.
*Late in evenings they can normally be found in our backyard swimming.
I try to do one fun activity with them each week. I may not get to every week, but I do try. We may do lunch & bowl at the bowling alley, go to the movies, visit a state park, hit the water park, got to the minor league baseball games, go to Desoto Caverns or Ft. Toulouse. Every other Friday night the city next to ours does a movie in the park. We are thinking about checking that out this Friday.DD (19)

We never take any vacations. But we're thinking about going camping for a weekend. Maybe lol. We want to take the kids to Niagara Falls.
Other than that, it's all local stuff. Tomorrow we go strawberry picking. Saturday is an air show, concert, & fireworks. Fourth of July there will be fireworks in the park up the street. The next week we are having our yard sale. The week after is dd's 17th birthday. Then the next week is my birthday. I don't think we'll slow down enough to go to NF until August lol.

Greebo and I had plans for a reunion of our gaming group to meet in Atlanta but due to some economic apprehensions and struggles very few can make it so it will be postponed.
This does however make us decide on what to do with the vacation fund:
- pay off my car (will be paid off in 2 months)
- do nothing and save the money for the next vacation (Disney with my BFF and her family... which is something I get very excited about)
- take a 3 day weekend somewhere this year (I would love to visit the Minnesota Ren Fest again)
We aren't in a hurry to make a decision so it will be interesting to see what we do.The Free Spirit Saver who walks the path with Greebo.

Summertime really doesn't change the schedule around here much. I would love to take a vacation of a week or more, but my DH cannot realistically take that much time off. He is the editor/writer/photographer for a weekly newspaper. Thankfully, he has a few interns this summer to help lighten the workload.
We do try to get way at least 1 weekend a month well the weather is nice, since we can really only afford to camp or visit family. So far we have gone camping twice (once in April and once in June) and visited my family in May. We will go camping at least 2 more times, but hoping that we can sneak in third trip sometime.
On the weekends that we don't go out of town we try to take a picnic lunch somewhere locally. We have lived here less than a year so we are still exploring the area.Julie

We never take a week long vacation. We just stay local. This year we bought season passes to Six Flags for me and the kids (got them for $45 each), so I am sure we will pack a cooler and head to St. Louis at least 4-5 times this summer for that. Other than that, we hang close to home....fishing, swimming, maybe a weekend camping trip, and at least one Cardinals game.
