generation now
I was listening to the message at church sunday and our pastor referred to our generation as generation now......yes I would have to agree with that. I am so tired of listening to people go on and on about how they need to buy a new cell phone because the one the have doesnt have a touch screen or buy a better house because everyone else has a better house. It is so refreshing to come here and chat with ya'll. I dont here hardly any of that jibberish here. I sat down with dh tonight and we worked out a budget that will be tight but very doable for the rest of the year! Yes we budget months in advance and try to make room for unexpected expenses. We live in a 100 year old farmhouse. While it is huge it isnt extravagant and needs a lot of work so that is what we are working on. We refuse to put this work on credit cards. There is nothing wrong with saving up for it. I for one am standing up and saying I am not generation now!
Ok I am done rambling now, lolHolly

Hi Holly, I agree, we do live in that generation, i was on the phone with verizon a few days ago. The service guy said did you know for $50 more you and your husband can update your phone to a smart phone. Of course i asked him if the phone was going to talk for me and know my every thought and he laughed. Im like NO.I not calling to a buy a new phone im calling for you to fix my bill.By the way i love farm old farm houses

I think this is extremely common now a days. Even my boys have their moments where they think they just have to have something. I don't think we every left the "ME" generation really. There seems to be a lot of people seeking gratification from putting themselves and their wants ahead of anyone or anything else. We have a relative who behaves like this and has made most of the family avoid him. Everything is about the best computer, best camera, best phone, best food, bills are a secondary thought, as long as he's got what he wants he's happy. Last year at Christmas he even blew off our family Christmas party because the budget had been reduced to just desserts instead of the normal Christmas feast. He decided that he wanted a "real" Christmas dinner and did not care that his kids sat waiting for hours all dressed up to come to the family Christmas party, missing out on everything. I guess he decided that since the food was budgeted that year that his gifts would be too, why bother. He had the nerve to ask us to send his gift along with his oldest that showed up for the party. I didn't send his gift! Generation now describes him perfectly.

I have a friend who is the same way. They have racked up thousands in cc debt because of it. They want what they want and they want it now. When I got a new camera earlier this year I saved and ended up getting a preloved one that has been great that cost me a lot less than the new one they put on credit cards. Now these credit cards, while they have great credit scores are hindering their ability to get a new house. I am just so over it all. There are so other things in life that are more important than stuff!

I will admit that I am part of generation now.
I still want this and that and sometimes I day dream about things I totally don't need. patience is not my strong point.
I fight my inner child on a regular bases and that's why I keep coming here.
I don't' have the latest anything. I have a pay as you go cell phone and my computer is at least 5 yrs old. It works fine so why replace it?
I do not have credit cards because I can't control myself with them. FV is my equivalent to AA.

I'm split right down the middle. I'm happy with my 150+ year old farm, older electronics, paid for cars as a general rule. However my inner child wants out sometimes like Ann said above. I really want a new car but keep talking that brat that wants out into waiting
because I can't pay cash now.
My sibling got a new iphone. My sibling has a high six figure income so it is a drop in the bucket. They are very financial savvy and savers. He waited until it was a good deal in his eyes. My kids were asked if they would like to have the older iphone. Of course they were thirilled as even if they can't use it as phone (they use prepay) it still has tons of neat apps, hold 3000 songs and has games. They were thrilled with this gadget! We were at an event and they showed it to their cousins boyfriend (25) asking if he wanted to play the guitar game like guitar hero on there. He actually said "who would want that! That's not a new iphone!" Huh?????Last edited by nodmicks; 07-14-2009 at 07:56 AM.

10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

There is nothing wrong w/ wanting or dreaming but you can't let it consume you. There is a very vast difference from being a trappist monk and fullfilling your every need instantly. This generartion to me should be names the "Rights of Entitlement Generartion". Not only do they want it there sure they deserve it just because there "Them". and to heck w/ everyone else. EWWW.
EX. I was pumping gas yesterday and this man was pumping gas w/ his van running. I said "Hey do you know you left the van running". He says "Yeah, and I'm not shutting it off either. Thats a fallacy. It's muchmore dangerous to use a cell phone". I said "There are signs all over asking you to shut down" He said "huh,I don't see any, call the cops". I said "NO, I'm sure it's much better for you to endanger us all so you don't lose 1 minute of air conditioning. No wonder the rest of the world thinks us Americans are all idiots". I would have told the attendent but I just picture a stoned 16 year old anyway. Rights of entitlement!!! And yes I usually try to mind my own business unless I feel I might "blow Up"!!.

So glad you were able to get your Iphone. We DO have to have some things that we really love and enjoy!!! Being frugal is not about denial of everything we want, it is about not wasting or indulging every whim (my opinion) BTW I have the Ipod touch which is like the Iphone without the phone and I love it!!!! I got it as a freebie with a bank deposit and opening a CD. Tamed the inner crybaby for a while!Challenges for 2012
