Study finds Organic not any healthier
http://www.centralillinoisnewscenter...im&id=52088857
I ran across this, I was also wondering why all the hype about organic foods. If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal. Not to
people or things.

I don't care what they say I don't think all the nasty stuff they spray all over everything is good for anyone! I think it is gross the way they treat animals and what stuff they pump them up with to get them fat fast. All the antibiotics because they are all stuffed into unnatural living conditions. Just horrible.
I am not rich so I can't buy everything organic but I do try to as much as possible. Milk, eggs, meat, chicken some fruits and veggies. Some are not as important they say, like things with tough skins.
I am also trying to make much more things from scratch and not processed things. It takes a lot more time and effort since I am in the learning stages of most things but it has to be better than a lot of the things out there.Married 22 years to Mark

I always buy chicken without antibiotics or hormones, veggies from farmers. I would be concerned with chemical sprays .

Wonder who paid for this "study"? There IS a difference in organic. We had a kitty that loved butter, but only organic butter. I tested her out - I bought the fancy name brands, and no-go, she would sniff it and walk away. Give her a piece of organic butter, and she'd go crazy. (She would come running from the end of the house when she would hear me opening the fridge to ask for "her" butter. Definitely a difference in smell that she could pick up between the organic and non-organic (tried several brands of non-organic vs. organic, just to test it out). And for me, with milk - non-organic gives me lots of mucus, but if I drink organic, I am fine.

They're talking about nutrition. They're probably right that organic veggies aren't any more nutritional than conventionally grown. But it is a fact that synthetic pesticides used on conventionally grown crops (non-organic) are hazardous to normal healthy human growth. Children can be especially vulnerable because they have not finished developing, but even adults are not immune to the toxins used on our food.

exactly, organic may not provide more nutrition. BUT it also doesn't provide all the poisons that treated foods potentially provide.
I don't eat exclusively organic foods but recognize their importance.
The study didn't say non-organic was the same as organic. It said that "mostly" the nutritional value of the foods were the same.

The way they've handled the topic has been a bit ambiguous in presentation.
I could definitely state that pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, rodenticides, hormones, carnuba wax, etc. all make me sick.
So I keep away from these substances as much as possible.
Nutritional value is the same in both types of foods, but human health is definitely impacted and compromised by "chemically treated" foods.Last edited by Incognito; 08-01-2009 at 10:37 PM.

Just like so many other studies they have missed the point. When I heard it I thought DUH. Organic food is healthier because it isn't covered in toxins or grown in toxins that we store in our livers and fat. Organic food is not super food. It has the nutrients and value as other food. Who said any different. The first thing you should have to answer when you get a grant for a study is :Are you paying attention to the real question?
Just like cash for clunkers. Not meant to get every rust bucket off the road but to get gas guzzlers and oil burners an early retirement.

everyone should read "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver. Discusses a lot about how much Americans are disassociated from their food and how little we really think about what we put in our bodies. So many health problems could be prevented if we only stopped to consider what we are really eating.
Seriously, check this one out from the library and read it.Last edited by akolb; 08-02-2009 at 03:48 AM.

I heard about this and saw it on BBC breakfast last week.
The opinion that I heard there was that - organic food simply tastes better.
Even though it is just as good 'nutrionally'
for you, I think that we can do without the toxins.
And let's face it - organic food just does simply taste better.*Avril*

I grow with mostly organic sprays that I personally mix myself. Use weak mixes and spray often. This way I know that if I don't wash the produce thoroughly, it won't build up toxins in my body, hopefully. Also don't really know the effect of commercial sprays on the environment. Yes I worry about the source of the study. But given the facts they were seeking to find, I'm sure the study was done in a scientific manner. But a study is very often, prey to its intent.
